im gonna change the type of litter we have got for our cat as it makes a mess and he keeps trying to eat it !!

should i jusr change it and he will be ok with it or should i leave some parcells in there so he knows its his ??

It kinda depends on the litter. Usually it's recommended to mix the old and new together until your kitty gets used to the new. The best way to do this is to put down a layer of the new litter on the bottom of the pan covered by the old litter. Then the cat discovers the new litter as he digs in his box. But if the new litter is similar in texture and material to the old, then it probably doesn't make much difference.

If you put it in the same location, I don't think you need to "prime" it. :)
