View Full Version : Worlds Best Cat Litter
xocats 8th July 2005, 12:02 AM I bought my first bag of WBCL today. I have been using PetCo Gold for years...it works fine but has quite a bit of dust. It will be a while before I begin to add the new litter because I just changed out their whole tray & cleaned it this morning so the pan is full.
I would love to know about others experiences when changing brands & types of litter. Any tricks that you know about that I might use?
Lei
MoochNNoodles 8th July 2005, 12:37 AM From your title I thought you were talking about a litter of kittens!
DragonLady 8th July 2005, 01:03 AM I use it and it is so much easier than the clay. If I didn't have so many kitties I would be flushing it instead of taking it to the trash. We ran out once and had to use clay again and I noticed that the clay smelled like dirt and made it hard to breath around it. I give a sample bag to every new kitten owner as well as the food samples.
MissCharlotte 8th July 2005, 01:04 AM Before I switched Charlotte to WBCL, I used regular clay (non-clumping). I believe the general rule of thumb is to switch very gradually over a period of time, especially if the texture or scent is different than what they're used to. Here's what I did. First, always put the "new" litter (WBCL) on the bottom. When the cat digs to cover up their waster, they will "discover" it on their own. I filled the bottom 1/4 of the litter box with WBCL and the remainder with 3/4 with the original litter. As I saw my cat had been accepting of this ratio, I increased the amount of new litter to that of the original litter (i.e. 50% WBCL/50% original litter) with every complete litter change.
If you have more than one litter box, you could place 100% WBCL in that and see if your cat starts using it. I think that was one of the suggestions on the WBCL bag. Good luck.

maverick_kitten 8th July 2005, 01:16 AM does wbcl smell more than clumping clay litter?
xocats 8th July 2005, 01:18 AM Thanks for the useful feedback. I use one litter box so I will wait until I am ready to change it out then do what you suggested. Your ideas are a huge help. :bigthumb:

xocats 8th July 2005, 01:20 AM I think that WBCL is unscented...good question though.
How are you doing tonight? I hope that you & your loved ones are safe.

maverick_kitten 8th July 2005, 01:23 AM we're all ok, thank you for asking :heart3: few people stranded at their offices but they managed to hitch hike home in the end.
Was wondering if wbcl would mask the smell or not? would litter deoderant work with it?
xocats 8th July 2005, 01:29 AM I am so glad that you are OK.
You might want to start a thread about masking litter odors. I use unscented litters. Scents make me sneeze. :ooh:

elizwithcat 8th July 2005, 02:08 AM You are supposed to mix it, but I was able to switch simply by giving them a litterbox filled with WBCL. But then my cats aren't picky about their litter.
MissCharlotte 8th July 2005, 02:21 AM WBCL smells like corn so I suppose it's scented. I have never smelled urine since I started using WBCL. Here is an excerpt from the company's website: Its unique microporous structure provides a large surface area to effectively trap and absorb ammonia and urine odors. Odors are quickly and naturally eliminated with no need for added chemicals or perfumes to mask odor.
ScamperFarms 8th July 2005, 02:42 AM Its good stuff. I have the sample bag from DragonLady :) funny thing is we also have a box with our yesterdays news in it, and lily and lace have been going in there more Silly kittens. I think its cause the sides are bigger and offer more privacy..but Loki has been useing the one with the WBCL in it heh.
WellingtonCats 8th July 2005, 08:51 AM when changing kitty litter over we just do the straight switch. Never had any problems.

Yeah, me too - I've changed litters at least half a dozen times, and I've never done it gradually, always just a straight switch, and my cats have never had a problem with this or refused to go in the litterbox or anything.
I'm not a huge fan of World's Best - it's okay, definitely better than some types, but I find the clumps stick to the box, which I don't like.

I've read on the board of folks who spray the pan with Pam or its equivalent after cleaning which helps to prevent litter from sticking.
We've got the boys using Feline Pine, but the DH doesn't particularly like the odor when it's used. No ammonia odor at all, but it does have the scent of wet sawdust which he doesn't like. The kids appear not to care :).

Wow. I've never had a problem with WBCL sticking to the box.

No, the clamps in WBCL aren't sticking to the box. I wonder if the poster confused it with Sweat Scoop litter. Now, those clamps definetly stick to the box. I stopped using Sweat Scoop for that reason.
xocats 8th July 2005, 04:00 PM I live in a one bedroom apartment. Now I am concerned about the odor of corn from the WBCL. I don't want my place to smell like corn.

I also live in a small apartment, and I honestly don't think I smell an over powering scent of corn. Maybe I just have gotten used to it though. I definitely prefer corn over the urine I used to smell when I used non-clumping clay...assuming I had to choose between the two odors.

I think the only way for you to really find out if you like it is to use it and see.
DragonLady 8th July 2005, 04:48 PM Just get a small bag and give it a try. You might try contacting the company, they might send you a sample bag for free or a coupon for a free bag. :)
xocats 8th July 2005, 05:00 PM Exellent idea...thanks. :)

Cessena 8th July 2005, 05:03 PM I live in a 1bdrm apt and I just started using worlds best. So far the only smell I've noticed is the absence of the smelly perfumes from my old cat litter. It does have a smell but it certainly isn't as smelly as the other litter I was using. I switched because my one cat seems to enjoy laying in the litter that gets on the floor and I'm concerned about her ingesting it. :-(
random 8th July 2005, 05:04 PM I switch litter back and forth on my Angelo, and he doesn't seem to care. As long as it is in the box, he will use it.
I was using Feline Pine for a long time until I brought in a new cat that HATED it. I switched to a corn cob litter (not World's Best) and they both were okay with it. It doesn't permit odors the way Feline Pine would after a kitty poop, but an ammonia smell does appear after a few days, even though I constantly scoop out the clumps. I'm also not a fan of the sticking to the box that it does.

They do have coupons. I clip mine from cats and kittens magazine.
missmolly 8th July 2005, 07:29 PM Does Cats and Kittens have a coupon in every issue? How much off? That may be worth a subscription!
RoseHawke 8th July 2005, 07:35 PM Feline Pine definitely doesn't do anything about the odor of a kitty poop! Does the WBCL help with that then?

Nope, I meant World's Best (maybe it's my boxes?), but I did try Swheat Scoop as well, and yes, it stuck to the box even worse than WBCL!
random 9th July 2005, 03:28 PM Swheat is pretty bad about it too. It was the sickly sweet smell that really stopped me from using that stuff. Ugh.

I have no problem with WBCL sticking to boxes. But when I used Sweat Scoop, it was sticking something awful, so I switch to WBCL and have no problems at all.
Hobbester 13th July 2005, 04:42 AM We (human + cat!) absolutely *LOVE* wbcl. It really doesn't smell at all, my mom was so surprised when she came over to visit and commented there was no "cat smell". One of my neighbours apartment stink of cat litter, you can even smell it down the corridor. We also sprinkle the litter with Arm & Hammer deodorizer and i think that helps too. Love the fact that we could flush wbcl down the toilet. Very convenient!

Deodorizer trick doesn't work for me. Mine two little monsters must hate the smell of baking soda, because they refused to use a litterbox when I used deodorizer on it. And when I say refused-one (the perfect cat) held it in all night. The other (the evil one :lol3: , the problem child) just pooped on my carpets. So, just WBCL and no deodorizer for me.
