Apparently many people would like their signatures checked or validated by a member of the mod squad. So that the announcement thread doesn't become a floodgate of requests, please post here if you would like your sig evaluated.

Hmm - no takers yet, so I'll "break the ice". I've ditched the gif signature and photo album link for the time being, and the current pictures are under 26 KB. The question is, are they "visually" too big?

valanhb

The visual rule we are going by is 2" total, or maximum 150 pixels high at 72 dpi. Yours is just right at 150 pixels high (which can also be found in the Properties.) :)

Thanks, Heidi - that's good to know for future reference, i.e., the next time I get bored and change my siggy!

Well I posted on the other thread but I couldn't work this out -- is mine too big with the line of txt and the picture? I know my picture is below kb, but is it too much with them together? If so I'll get working tonight. :)

Sam,

The height is 182 pixels, which is over, and the text with the space only adds to it. Try and get the text next to the picture after you resize it.

Beth, yours is fine. 126 pixels high and 26 KB.

Hi Deb-

Thanks for that. I'll work on it this afternoon! :D

How do you check the DPI? Is mine okay? I checked my size, and height, and it's all fine, but I don't know how to check DPI? Is that under "Properties" too? Is mine okay?

Unless you are using a high end image program like Photoshop that allows you to specify the dpi for various outputs, the default dpi is 72. :) 72 dpi is also the recommended setting for making online graphics, since it allows for good clarity and faster load times.

I do use Photoshop.

If you have Photoshop and want to double check, open the image, then go to Image, Image Size. The dpi is the same as the Resolution. It is probably set at 72 pixels/inch, which is the default.

Sandra, your image is fine. :)

Every time I think I got it figured out... it turns out I'm more confused. :lol3:

I really hope these two ticker things are going to be OK. I have some odd , off and on memory problems and being able to use these here would be wonderful.
I can't see the size...but I see they are easy to scroll past...and would even make me special in my own way. :paranoid:
What da' ya think ?
Fingers crossed...

If they're OK... then I'll find out why they are not working.

Thanks for your time.

Thank you Hissy.
Guess I'll go see if I can try to fix them...then have you check for me.
I picked both very plain lines and just a pointer for them at the ticker site. Thinking that might keep them smaller.
I picked blue for my boy kitty and pink for my new baby girl kitten. This way I can keep track of their exact ages and have it right where I can find it without lots of trouble.

Wow ! Your prompt.
Thanks for all your help so far. I'm starting to like this site.

Would you like the photos put together? This one is actually under 14 KB, and includes the names:

Pepper's pic was just fine in height, but for some reason was showing at 38 KB. I optimized it in Photoshop, and now it's about 5 KB. :bigthumb: If you could just replace that one with this one, you're good. Also, is there a way to put the ticker beside the picture of Pepper? It would make it slightly smaller in overall height. :)

It's a bit too big, Howard. The two pictures plus the two Cheshire cats = 31,154 bytes. The picture of the kittens is 10,620 bytes, so that would probably be the one to resize. Removing one of the Cheshire cats (9,091 bytes apiece) would also do the trick.

Here's the kitten picture resized to 5,922 bytes; I made it the same height as your other picture, and just reduced the dpi to 150:

Does anyone have a trick for keeping the text clear with a smaller sig?

The dimensions are okay, but I'm getting a reading of 37,577 bytes. Only 30,000 are allowed. Why don't you lower the dpi a bit?
Here's a 24K (almost 25 KB) version, where you can read the words (only my fifth attempt at resizing it):http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v194/jcatpics/beachsigchanged.jpg

O.K., but if I redo the whole thing & save it at a lower dpi, won't the words be even blurrier, or will it improve? I think it's saved @ 72dpi. I hate to do alll that work, & try to choose a bold/big font, & the words are still blurry! Some people have such clarity in their fonts, how to they do it?

valanhb
4th July 2005, 03:43 AM
Try this one:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/valanhb/beachsig3-1.jpg

I just opened it in Photoshop, Saved for Web at 70% Quality which I think maintained the quality of the photo but reduced the size to 28KB instead of 37.

If you only have text, it won't possibly be over the 30 KB limit. The only thing you have to think about it the height, or ~1.5" in visual height. You can't get a real read on the properties of your signature as text because it isn't an image that has properties like that.

1 KB = 1000 Bytes

The pictures are fine, but check to see if you've exceeded 1.5 " in height with the pictures and the text. My ruler seems to have disappeared for the umpteenth time (Anybody know why a cat would keep making off with a little plastic ruler? He always takes the one that indicates inches, too, not just centimeters)!
