View Full Version : Newbie is looking for some help! ))))
~love_that_cat~ 18th May 2005, 06:38 PM Hello everybody!
Yet another newbie here! :wavey: I always had a passion for the cats, but never had an oppotunity to get one of my own. All of our appartments were not pet-friendley. So, now finally me and my boyfriend moved in into appartment whos landlord allow to have up to three cats! We are so happy and been going to different shelters for the past couple of weeks on our days off trying to see that unique babe waiting just for us to pick him up. We already have everything prepared for a new member of our family- everything but the food! :lol3:
Now me and my boyfriend have a little bit of disagreement, and I need your help guys finding some more info on this! here is why: yesterday I saw a beautiful cat- Otsi, 3 year-old declawed babe( poor pampkin, can not imaging what he had to go through !!!! :onfire: ), we just clicked as soon as I laid my eye on him- he start "talking" to me, I picked him up, petted and I knew he's going to love me forever and I am going to do the same for him. He is just adorable BIG boy!!! ( he is really big) :lol3: First of all my boyfriend said no- I WANT TO HAVE A baby-kitte, so he will only know me, he will only love me and he will not show me his attitude. Trust me, I have read a lot of info on kittens, plus I've been reading your forum for a long time now and I know- even kittens will give you and attitude, and sometimes adopted adult cats will even become a better companion then kittens. The he told me- he is so old, he is not even going to play with me- and I have told him- it is wrong, even if he will be a little bit less troubled-cat- since he is already an adult and not going to "discover discovered" ( like little kittens do) he is still will be very playfull, and just to show him- I am right- I start playing with Otsi and he replied to me in very-very joyful manner!!!! :happy2: Though it did not satisfied my boyfriend, I told him- there are also catnipped toys around- that will make him play as he is crazy!!!!! NO! was his answer to me- put him back in a cage!!!!! So I did, but could not resist just looking at him and he did the same, and even when I left the room with Otsi I looked at him again trough the window and he remaind very uncalm- trying to get his paws through the cage towards me, looking at me soooooooooooo sad and mewing.......then he laid dawn and put one of his front paw on top of his little cute face..... That just broke my heart!!!!! Now I know I have to come back for him, but my boyfriend just won't give up- I want to have a baby-kitten.
I don't know how to insure him that the older cats DO have feelings for second owners as well?! :paranoid: Any ideas? I also told him that maybe it will be better if we will take two cats together- like a sister and brother- so it will be easier for them to adjust. Maintaining two or one cat doesn't make a big-big difference ( plus we already set aside a saving account for a kitty! ) Also my work schedule is prefferably between 3pm and 11 pm and his like 7 am till 5-6 pm- so I told him our new family member will be bored for a couply of hours- why wouldn't we take him a little one to keep a company ( now- saying a "little one" I only meant like 8-11 month old cat, but my boyfriend thinks 3 weeks- to a couple of months!!!!! ) SAys NO anyways...so I really-really need your help guys on that!!!! Sorry for the long post and I hope to get some answers soon....))) otherwise I will be forced to just go and get my baby Otsi and bring him home- then deal with my BF ( I am also so scared somebody esle will come today, like him and take him away......... ) But don't want us to go that way..... You know what I mean?
Thank you so much in advance!
Yosemite 18th May 2005, 06:50 PM Firstly, you shouldn't get a kitten under 8-10 weeks. They should not be weaned from their moms until then.
Every cat has a different personality - whether it be older when you get it or a kitten. It sounds like this cat has "chosen" you and that's always a good thing as far as I'm concerned. If it were me, I would go back and get that cat. I agree that if your boyfriend wants a kitten, if you can manage 2 cats, please just let him get a kitten as well.
The cats will have to be introduced gradually probably, but there is a lot of information on this site to help you with that.
My experience has been that cats really do choose who they will be close to and there isn't a whole lot you can do about it.
For instance, Bijou ONLY sleeps with me and ONLY suckles on my neck before bed. But during the day, he is definitely my husband's cat and follows him around.
I hope you get this kitty that has chosen you and I also hope you get a kitten for your boyfriend. There will be training involved with the kitten, like teaching it not to bite (they usually do when they are little as that is how they play) among other things. Having an older cat with the kitten is good too as the older cat will often teach the kitten.
Good luck.
If I've given you any bad advice I hope someone with more knowledge will correct me and give you better advice.
~love_that_cat~ 18th May 2005, 06:57 PM Yosemite, thank you so much for your reply.
Yes, I've heard about cats who just chose their owner, and I am sure Otsi is THAT way and he choose me! :)
Concern that my boyfriend has is that cat is not going to love us as a little one would, just because we are his "second parents". Off course I gave him my stupid comment that I am not his FIRST girlfriend- does that mean he doesn't love me THAT much ( or even more) as he did his EX???? Lol.....
valanhb 18th May 2005, 07:03 PM Welcome to the site!
Linda took the idea out of my head...
If it's possible to have 2 cats, can you compromise and give this sweet guy who OBVIOUSLY chose you as his person a wonderful home as well as a baby-kitten for your BF? That would be reassuring to the kitten to have another feline around, and a kitten would help bring out the playfulness in Otsi. :)
~love_that_cat~ 18th May 2005, 07:22 PM I Just found the picture of lill Otsi through petfinder site- so here he is- on this picture he also looks a little bit darked then he is in real life! ;-) ( or maybe it is just my monitor here... )

Thank you so much! That's probably what I will do- but I've read somewhere that if cat and a kitten have a big difference in the age- they will not get along- is it true?
mybunnyslipperz 18th May 2005, 07:26 PM Hi! As an owner of an older adopted cat and a cat that was adopted at 4 weeks old, I can't see a difference in who loves me more. Yes, Mousse knows his name better than 'Nilla, because he has been called Mousse his entire life, whereas 'Nilla was found wandering the streets at over a year old and didn't come with a name.
Animals who have had it rough in life and have been abandoned at shelters, gotten lost and were picked up, etc. are often MORE loving than pets who come to expect that you are supposed to love them. Animals have feelings too and when they are put in a shelter, for whatever reason, their little hearts break. Either they have been abused or neglected previously, or they were abandoned by the only people who ever loved them for what could be as stupid a reason as "they didn't match the new furniture". Either way these guys have TONS of love to give and they really are more appreciative of the love that you give them. They are the true essence of "unconditional love".
Good luck making your decision - and if all else fails - adopt TWO!!!

AWWWWWWW!!!!
*heart breaks*
:heart3: :heart3: :heart3: :heart3: :heart3:
please go get him, he looks so sad - and a pretty boy like that shouldnt be sad!!
My parents adopted a 3yr old cat - he was much more affectionate and loyal than our kitten we got later... Probably because he had it tough earlier in life so he really loved my parents!!
The one they got as a kitten was a spoiled brat ;)
Tell your boyfriend you want a cat each!! He can pick his own kitten.
Yosemite 18th May 2005, 07:36 PM :yeah:
You just have to go get that gorgeous cat. Take your boyfriend with you and let him pick out a kitten! When a cat chooses you, it would be an absolute CRIME not to take that kitty home IMO.
Oh please go get that beautiful creature or I won't be able to sleep tonight and I'm serious!

SaveTheKitties 18th May 2005, 08:20 PM Cats and kittens of different ages will get along after they get to know each other. You may need watch them together for the first week or two. They both just need to know their limits with each other. I had two older kittens (7 months and 5 months) and brought in 4 little orphan kittens ( 3 weeks and 4 weeks old). My older established cats hissed and swated at the babies for the first few days, then ignored them and then curiosity took over and they started to interact and play together. Now they are best of friends.
I have noticed the same thing with the oldest cat (we adopted him at 6 months old) and my dogs who have been with us for ever. First the hissing and swatting, then ignoring and now the they play and sleep together.
Get the one who has chosen you and tell your boyfriend to chose his baby.

halfpint 18th May 2005, 09:21 PM Oh my he's such a pretty boy, and if you want him you need to go get him, to many times I have wanted something (not just a kitty) and when I decided I had to have it was long gone. I had 2 older cats then introduced 2 kittens in the house and there fine, it just takes a bit to get used to each other, actually I think the older cats sometimes just ignore them lol, but that doesn't last long. And My Female Basset thinks the cats are hers....GOOOOO get him lol

But early on Friday I am gonna bring him to his forever home ( well at least if my bf wont change his mind which I daubt- you guys helped me a lot to talk him into it!!! ) :bigthumb:
It is just that I remember some posts around here that older and younger cats wont get along- they will not even play together- but back into my childhood I remember my granny had about 6 dogs and 5-11 cats( some of them where neighbours' cats) diff ages but all of them were eating together playing together and sleeping together! :)
babygirl 18th May 2005, 11:25 PM Hi :wavey: welcome to the site, Otsi is gorgeous.

THANK YOU! :heart3: :heart3: :heart3:
~love_that_cat~ 18th May 2005, 11:40 PM My BF just offered me to sponsor Otsi and adopt a kitten. This way he said you will know he will get a home soon and we could get a kitten.... :-( I don't know what to say... I want Otsi....
valanhb 18th May 2005, 11:44 PM You know...if he doesn't want Otsi because he was jealous that he was loving on you, then the best solution would be for him to find that kitten that chooses HIM, and let you get Otsi. :) That way you have his & hers kitties. We have that at my house, and it works out great. ;)

PLEASE, cross your fingers so it WILL happen!!!!
halfpint 19th May 2005, 01:00 AM I have news for your BF My cats Love my hubby way more then me :lol3: he should be prepared for that, Yeah make him go pick him up for you, give him a chance to fall in cat love  I have 4 inside and they all :heart3: my hubby more except 1 female who doesn't really like anyone but me, I have also rescued 10 and have 1 more that has 5 two month old babies that I am getting ready to bring home  and my hubby has been a GEM ;) built a cat enclouser for me goes and gets food, litter, and whatever I need for them, oh yea he's sucked in big time :lol3: Your BF will soon be sucked in to as long as he is an animal lover, lots of good vibes to you hoping you get him ASAP :wavey:
slitty_kittay 19th May 2005, 01:01 AM Its only fair that you both get to decide - so if you cant make up your minds it seems like the only choice is to compromise and get 2 kitties!! Otsi and a kitten your boyf picks!! :bigthumb:
You have to get otsi - you cant mess with fate. When I went to get Dax, I had my mind set on one of her sisters - a very pretty, unusual coloured kitten.
Problem was - that kitten didnt want to go in our carrier for anything, it just downright didnt like us. Miss Dax however, kept purring when I touched her and repeatedly jumped in my carrier - when she fell asleep in there I gave up trying to befriend the other kitten and just closed the carrier door on the sleeping Dax and took her home. At the time I thought she was a boy too, I hadnt wanted a boy, but hey..
Does any of this matter now? Would I trade her for that pretty coloured kitten? Of course not! She is my baby now - and the most beautiful tux cat on the planet :D
Cats choose their servants. It looks like you have been chosen :smile2:
-If I had the money, I'd be on a plane to arrange import of that sweet baby!!!
what a angel face!! :heart3: :heart3: :heart3: :heart3:

halfpint 19th May 2005, 01:03 AM Oh and to add My Mickey was almost 8 when my HUBBY went and got him from the pound and guess who Mickey Loves the most, hubby. This Cat goes for 2 walks on a leash a day and my HUBBY is at the end of that leash, go figure
Yosemite 19th May 2005, 02:16 AM BTW - if you follow the advice of some of the wonderful folks here who know what they are talking about, if you introduce the cats to each other correctly, you shouldn't have any problem at all. We kept Bijou and Mika separated except when we were here to supervise and they are just fine together. It was touch and go at first though.
I hope the next post I read is that you have gotten the cat that picked you and a kitten for your bf.
My fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes are all crossed hoping for this.
peachytoday 19th May 2005, 02:41 AM I have three cats. Two I have had since kittens and one who came to our house fully grown and adopted us. Inca is such an joy to us as well as Redford and Cassidy. ~love_that_cat~ 19th May 2005, 03:16 AM GUYS!!!!!
MY BF just called me at work and said- please hurry up I have a surprise for you.... Wonder what it could be????? ;)
Talon 19th May 2005, 03:25 AM Crossing fingers!!!!!!!!
I have 4 cats, two I got as kittens and two as adults (one 1 year old and one 2 years old - estimates on both). They are all adorable!
~love_that_cat~ 19th May 2005, 03:34 AM Talon, now did they all became a friends as soon as they saw each other? or do they kind a hiss at each other all the time and fight?
And I am sure they are adorable!!!!!
Talon 19th May 2005, 03:50 AM Hiss, spit and fight! Depending on the diamics and the personalites, it took anywhere from about 2 week for the second kitten to get accepted to the first kitten and my 17 year old cat at the time. The third cat was the then-we-guess two year old. He just didn't take no for an answer, and loved on everyone - it took him only about a week to worm his way in. The last one (in my avatar) took about 4 weeks. The other three were "just fine" without him. Now of course, they all hang out, chase and sleep in the same area.
kluchetta 19th May 2005, 04:58 AM GUYS!!!!!
MY BF just called me at work and said- please hurry up I have a surprise for you.... Wonder what it could be????? ;)
You MUST tell us as SOON as you find out!!! ;) How exciting! Cats are all different, as far as being loving or outgoing, etc. but when a cat chooses you, it's pretty special.
stormy 19th May 2005, 10:47 AM Hello and welcome!!!! :wavey:

~love_that_cat~ 19th May 2005, 02:17 PM Last nigh we discovered couple of things..another one we discovered this morning...ok....here it is....
Otsi was taken when my boyfriend came to pick him up- they said that somebody took him at the same day we pass on him.... :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:
( I do trust my boyfriend, but going to that shelter tomorrow morning anyways..no hard feelings, BF, but....just to make sure! ;) )
But he brought home a 6 weeks old kitten that was about to be putten asleep because he is very-very little and they think there are somekind of problems with his heart ( his mommy cat had a very very bad infection) and he( my BF) just could not pass on him...yeah I know- you should just see this little baby- his ALL black, I mean even his eyes are black, his claws, his nose- everything...He is soooooo little and sooooo shy- you HAVE to see him- as soon as I will make some pictures I will sure to show him to you ( I already took a couple last night- but did not have time to put on my PC yet)
We did not come up with the name yet- but I am about to go and check out some websites for pet names! Since he brought him home baby did not go to the bathroom- we watch him very very closely and he felt asleep on my bf jacket in a bathroom floor ( next to his litter box) so I am still watching him for any signs of beeing sick- but he eats like a crazy ( wet kitten food they gave him at a shelter), runs and then plays, falls and falls a sleep!   He is sooooooo cute!!!!! What really amazed me- he made his way UP TO OUR BED this morning- I opened my eyes and heard him mewing- I called him- Come here little baby kitty-kitty-kitty....And here he is- climing on the blanket to the bed like it is nothing- you should see him- he is very very small even for 6 weeks- like he just was born yesterday- but seeeeems soooooooooo strong! And then he JUMPED OFF the bed!!!!! I thought I am gonna have a heart attack- he is sooo little and I was scared this way he'll breake some bones!!! But he did not seems to care! I have no idea why they wanted to put him asleep! They told my bf that he was very last in a litter and after and hour all kittens were born- they really did not think there are more kittens to come! I guess that makes him special, huh? :lol3: No, really, he is a sweetie... I already told my BF- well it seems you pick yourself one up and I should go pick somebody else- but we decided to go to the vet and see- what special needs this kitty cat has first and if we could afford it.... Still miss little Otsi... :( But I hope he will be very happy in his new house!
Second thing we dicovered this morning- is that my BF has an allergy ( or he just got sick and think it is allergy). He never had one before- he used to have three cats when he lived with his mom and dad- and never had any problems. But this morning was like hell for him- his nose was running, his throut hurt, his eyes all red and runny.... :( I hope he will be fine ( + he does have an allergy during the spring blooming, maybe that's it???? )
Anyways..... I am glad we have that little piece of happiness and optimisms wrapped in a black furr..... :heart3: :heart3: :heart3: :heart3:
He really does make your heart melt- soooo cute....
Now I have so many things to do- when we left today I made sure he has planny of food and his water fauntain( yes, we bought THAT thing!!!! :bigthumb: ) is running just fine- so he has a fresh water till 3 pm- when my BF will get home. We also left him a little alarm clock with FM on- so he can enjoy some TUNES!!!! there is cozy BF's jacket and litter box and a HUUUUUGE HUUUGE room all for his own little pleasures to run around and play ( it is a room where I put my make up on and big enough for me to sit and stand- and probably make one step forward and back but for that little baby it is HUGE! I am telling you he is soooooo small!!!!!) When we left baby was playing with his own back paws- and you should see that! :lol3: :lol3: :lol3: he was laying on a back and biting his own paws, rolling all over places, make his paws "play" with him!!!!!! :lol3: :lol3: :lol3: Also he was trying to bite my fingers and toefingers today- so I assume- it is lack of motherhood and brotherhood if I could say so ( I've read that if kitten has been removed from his mother and sisters and brothers too earlie- he will try to bite- cause he thinks WE are cats too and that is the only way to play!!!!!Am I right?)- so I already set up some rules- NO BITING!
Sorry for the long post, guys and thank you for beeing soooo helpful! )))))
~love_that_cat~ 19th May 2005, 02:28 PM Hello and welcome!!!! :wavey:

Thank you!!!!
I forgot to add that they have told us the kitty need a speacial care- but my BF is Russian and he did not really get what it was, he just was trying to save little babe, they've told me it is not that serious, so we are going to find out today if there is something wrong with him.
kluchetta 19th May 2005, 02:33 PM Oh, he sounds so cute! I'm training my six-week-old kittens not to bite humans by using a sock on my hand so they can still play, but not learn bad habits.
Hope your BF doesn't have an allergy - by the way, I have a couple people here that DO, and sore throat USUALLY isn't one of the symptoms. Let us know what you name him. I read a really cute black cat name on this board but I can't remember it right now.

kluchetta 19th May 2005, 03:48 PM Thanks! BTW, that cute name was "Spooky". I just think that is so cute for a black cat.

PS: I know there are some threads probably about that in health and nutrition topics- could you point me into the right direction please?

slitty_kittay 20th May 2005, 01:18 PM Shady sounds like a great name!!
I hope he doing well. What did the shelter say to feed him? Since he is so young and possibly a bit frail it might be a good idea to ask around for ideas in the nutrition forum if the shelter didnt give you much help. I'm sure you have it all sorted.
goodluck with your cute new baby!!:)
Yosemite 20th May 2005, 02:20 PM What a dear little guy! He is sooooo sweet. His face looks a bit like a baby bear - I'd call him Bear if he were mine.
~love_that_cat~ 20th May 2005, 07:45 PM Thank you!
Shelter did give us some info- and they also gave us a can of kitten food ( Yams? don't remeber exactly, since I am @ work now! ;) )
But he does look like a little bear!
