View Full Version : What type of litter do you use? (Or shall I say, your cats use?)
CJandBilly 17th March 2005, 08:32 PM What type of litter do you buy for kitty?
I buy CJ and Billy Fresh Step, because Billy has, for some reason, no matter how I change his diet, the nastier smelling poo ever! And Fresh Step masks the smell a lot. I was just wondering......
What type of litter do you buy for kitty?
katspixiedust 17th March 2005, 08:35 PM I always buy Cat's Pride. It's good stuff. :bigthumb:

That's what I used to use, but it didn't mask Billy nasty smelling, urm..... poo. His, urm..... poo, smells that bad!

My roommates kitty Coco has that same problem. With Waffle that's really not an issue though. When Coco uses Waffle's litterbox however, I can be across the apartment and know what he's done! :nausea: I'm trying to remember what it is that she buys for his litter...hrmmmmmmmm...I can't remember. If I do I'll come back in here and let you know though. And hey, if I don't remember before then, I'll be back at my apartment this evening and can tell you for a fact what she uses. :bigthumb:
DawnofSierra 17th March 2005, 08:40 PM Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance Free. Sierra and I feel it's the best littler we've ever used!
halfpint 17th March 2005, 08:40 PM I buy scoop away or fresh step,I also bought 2 of those litter lockers that you ut the litter in and I think they are GREAT, it keeps from having to empty everytime or even everyday, they are real good kinda like a diaper genie, got them at petsmart check them out
turtlecat 17th March 2005, 08:43 PM We are worlds best users, because for whatever reason the clay litters really affect gibby, and in an uri kind of way that I don't like. the pee smell is totally masked.. poop however, is .. verrrrry stinky.. as there aren't any perfumes.

How much do they cost, if you can remember? I'm actually running by PetSmart later tonight to help my friend get a pet fish (she unfortunately can not join us cat lovers as her whole family is deathly allergic to them, so they'd never be able to visit her apartment, so a fish is the best she can do for now :( ) so I'll have to remember to check that out!

You can buy a 21 lbs box of Fresh Step at Wal-Mart for about $9. :bigthumb:
GrayKittenLove 17th March 2005, 08:49 PM Currently I'm using The World's Best, although I plan on going back to Tidy Cat or Fresh Step. Gandalf has the worst smelling poo and WBCL doesn't mask the smell at all, of course it doesn't help that he doesn't cover it up but I notice it a lot more with WBCL. :nausea:
halfpint 17th March 2005, 08:56 PM The litterlocker is just under $20.00 and the cartliage for bags is about $7.50 or so, but they last a long time you tie it off and remove the litter filled bag and then tie another knot put it back on the wheel and there ya go, I really think its worth it, that way you don't have to keep it sittng in a bag till you take it out, and you can get by emptying the thing 1 time a week if you like or every few days, there great no stinky room lol
geogirl 17th March 2005, 10:50 PM We recently switched to Citramax. I was skeptical at first, but my cats absolutely love the stuff! It is made from dried orange peels and has a texture like hamster bedding. For the first time ever, my cats completely bury everything. I just scoop out the solids and stir the rest, and it's like new. So far, it's been two weeks and I haven't needed to change it yet.
I also highly recommend the Litter Locker and the Clevercat top entry litter box.
I read a couple of things recently about kitties having all sorts of problems from using clumping litter. I don't know how true it is, but I thought you might like to know.
Cirque 17th March 2005, 11:00 PM Maybe his diet is contributing to the smell? Depending on what Buddy eats his poo can go from heavenly (ok not quite) to downright something that came from the deepest pits of hell itself. After giving up on Pounce treats his poo seems to be back to the normal not stinky poo I can tolerate.
Petnurse2265 17th March 2005, 11:08 PM We use about 120 pounds on Tidy cat multiple cat once a month, but I laso use just enough litter to cover the bottom of the pan and dump it everyday.
CJandBilly 17th March 2005, 11:11 PM Uhh... Cirque... that's Billy. :lol3: I've tried changing his diet. His brothers, his mother's, and his father's are the same way. CJ's is not quite as bad, but, I still think it's something from his family.
MissCharlotte 18th March 2005, 01:14 AM Currently I'm using The World's Best, although I plan on going back to Tidy Cat or Fresh Step. Both my cats use WBCL. It's great stuff. I never smell urine and I only smell poo if one of the cats does not cover it. And I also believe diet has a lot to do with how stinky the poo is.
pinkdaisy226 18th March 2005, 01:59 AM Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance Free. Sierra and I feel it's the best littler we've ever used!
We use this brand too, based on the suggestion of Stephanie and Sierra! We also have the litter locker... I used to like Tidy Cats Crystals but Baylee didn't like it as much, I don't think.
DustBunny 18th March 2005, 11:27 PM Tidy Cats scoopable. I would love to try Swheat scoop but hardly anywhere around here carries it and the places that do charge $13 for the smallest bag!
No complaints about Tidy Cats though
starlie 19th March 2005, 12:22 AM I made the switch from WBCL to Tidy Cats Scoopable (Multiple Cats), and so far we've had no problems. The smell is masked immediately and sometimes I forget that I need to scoop the box. :lol3:

Does your kitty have stinky poo?
starlie 19th March 2005, 12:38 AM They never had stinky poo until I started feeding them canned food everyday. Since then, their poop was so foul smelling, I literally gagged when they used the litter box. The WBCL odor control didn't kick in until 10-15 minutes after they used the box. However, Tidy Cats kicked in immediately. I've had no problems with tracking or dust (which I did with WBCL).
I've also used Swheat Scoop and although it works great for odor control it sticks to the bottom of the box (even when I use Pam) and it tends to attract little bugs (so does WBCL). Arm & Hammer works well to, but sometimes their paws would have green gunk on it from stepping in the "clump". I've tried the other main brands too, but I've had the most success with Tidy Cats.
Momofmany 19th March 2005, 03:29 AM I use cheap clay litter mixed with Littermate additive. I found it at a cat fancy show last fall, bought a box to test it out (it appeared too good to be true) and will never use anything else. You can't buy it it stores but even buying it online with the shipping, it has cut my cost by $900 a year, the cats LOVE it, and the smell is gone.
I have 14 cats and it didn't matter what I used or how often I cleaned, there was always that residual smell in the house. It is gone with Littermate. I used to buy about 70 pounds of clumping litter a week and am down to a 20 pound bag of clay every 2 weeks, plus the littermate stuff. And best of all, my husband no longer minds scooping it, so it saves me work.
Everything the site claims about this litter is true. Trust me on this one. I don't get a kick back from them to say this. I am simply a true believer.

WeLoveEllie 19th March 2005, 05:07 AM We use Exquisitecat litter. Has anyone tried using the self cleaning litter box?
ChesterandAbbys 22nd March 2005, 03:00 AM We use Fresh Step for our kitty's, and they don't seem to have any problesm with it. I was wanting to try that Cedar kind, but I don't want to mess with their routine, so i opted not to. have a great day!
sharky 22nd March 2005, 05:42 AM Thanks to a wonderful suggestion on here from someone , I went to the feed store and got chn scratch ... mix of corn and wheat ... cat love it order isnt to bad and it starys in the box.. ohh and a fifty lb bag costs 10 bucks... I used to use tidy cat but the more I read about clay the less I like it...
What is smelly chils eating?? what did you try... Kandie use to clear the whole room when she was on friskies but now she hardly smells..
RarePuss 22nd March 2005, 06:09 AM FreshMagic, it's a silica crystal litter, excellent :)
CJandBilly 22nd March 2005, 02:10 PM What is smelly chils eating?? what did you try... Kandie use to clear the whole room when she was on friskies but now she hardly smells..
Billy and CJ eat Purina Kitten Formula for dry food, (CJ's pregnant, so that won't change for a while) and they get Friskies canned food. You said the Friskies make their "stuff" stink? Hmmmm.... would the canned food Friskies?
sharky 22nd March 2005, 06:28 PM it could due to the by products.. I now use Nutro , wellness and Merrick and Authority canned lots less smell
Alisa 28th March 2005, 06:23 PM Feeding your cat wet food will cause stinky poop. I feed my kittens Nutro Natural choice dry food and they love it. I used to mix in Nutru moist food but their poop odor could kill the strongest man so i stopped. I also use Fresh Step and mix in Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deoderizer -- it really works.
And ALL cat owners should buy Litter Locker. It is the best think ever invented for a home with cats.
Amy-DHH 28th March 2005, 06:55 PM Tidy Cat Crystal Blend (scoopable). Works great at controlling odor, it easily scooped (and I scoop into my Litter Locker - love that thing), and he doesn't track it much further than about a foot outside the box... he's a digger though, so I'm not sure how much is tracked versus just tossed from the box :lol3:

Thanks to so much wonderful reviews, I switched to Tidy Cats scoopable, and have yet to smell Billy's "bombs!" I like it, and they didn't mind it at all!
Billy is the same way, ComeresMom.... he is QUITE a digger! He throws his litter... ohhh... I'd say 2-3 feet from the box! I have a covered, box, and that stops him from making an even bigger mess, but, he still mananges to throw it out! I tried a litterbox with a flap, but, he took the flap off, dragged it into his litterbox, buried it, and then just went on top of it! (Thank goodness there was litter between his poo and the flap!) I constantly dug it out, and put it back on, until I just gave up! It was a plastic flap, so if anyone is going to get a flap door litterbox, might I suggest a flexible flap!? The other kind just doesn't work! If only cats could learn how to flush!
MyFirstRagdoll 28th March 2005, 08:04 PM I use Tidy Cats scoopable, but thinking on switching to feline pine.

vegansoprano 29th March 2005, 02:03 AM I use the cheapest scoopable litter available for my adult cats. I go through huge quantities and need the odor control because of the numbers and the relatively small space.
For young kittens, I use regular clay litter if they are in the foster room and either Swheat, World's Best, or Feline Pine if they are in playpens.
Alisa 29th March 2005, 02:17 AM Is it bad to use clumping litter for kittens 3 months of age? I currently use fresh step clumping litter.
vegansoprano 29th March 2005, 02:34 AM I've used it with kittens that young and have never had a problem. Just make sure they aren't eating it. And unscented is better than scented.

Even if wet food causes stinky poop, a long-term diet of all dry food greatly increases the chances of diabetes, urinary crystals, and kidney disease. I'd much rather scoop a little more often than have to cope with any of these serious chronic conditions.

Yeah.... and it makes them SO much happier! :jump:
cavcmc 30th March 2005, 12:44 AM I'm a new cat owner (less than a week) but am using Swheat Scoop on the recommendation of customers (we have a pet supply store). So far I am very impressed. No smell, easy cleanup and little tracking.

Sometimes the litter gets 'stuck' to her paws and she licks it off..because of this, should I change the type of litter i use?

In ever knew that. I was told that feeding them dry food was find and better for their teeth. Ill have to do more research now.
thanks for the info.
jettafer99 31st March 2005, 10:44 PM Arm and Hammer Unscented super scoop. It rocks.. no dust, quick clumping and no odor. :)
Felicia's Mom 1st April 2005, 10:25 PM Felicia and Beau use Heartland Wheat litter.
I like it for several reasons.
1. it is flushable.
2. it is harmless if the cat eats it.
3. it is delivered. This is nice because I don't drive.
darkeyedgirl 1st April 2005, 10:50 PM Tidy Cats for Multiple Cats. Has a picture of 3 cats on the bag.
My lovelies have 6 boxes and I change them once a week. So I buy A LOT of Tidy Cats.
Alisa 2nd April 2005, 07:40 PM Ive read some good things about Arm & Hammer Multi cat formula. Has anyone used it? I bought it today and im hoping my kittens dont have a problem with it. I was using Fresh Step.
LaceyDF 2nd April 2005, 07:44 PM I buy the Arm & Hammer kinds, they seem to work very well!

mine don't like anything else!
kittylea 4th April 2005, 10:50 PM Sakura uses Max scoop. She has used clumping litter all her life so i dont want to change it. I feed her wet and dry food. They both have advantages and disadvantages. I dont think neither of them are wrong to use.
Wet food can cause lots of teeth problems and dry food can cause Uti's and eveerything that comes with that problem. so i figure it safer to just use both
yellow-flower 14th April 2005, 05:35 PM I've found that Meijer brand cat litter for Multiple Cats is really good. I recently geto petco brand and it not as good as Meijer at odor control. My father also agrees that Meijer is the best after years of "testing".
As for stinkie poo. I think alot of it is diet. I know with both of my cats Kitten Chow gave them super stinky poo. Iams corrected the problem but I've found that Nutro gives them the nicest smelling poo.
Yellow-Flower, Romeo, and Chloe
eilcon 14th April 2005, 08:20 PM Arm & Hammer Multicat w/Crystals. Seems to work well.
adiasmum 19th April 2005, 05:00 PM Adia uses Arm & Hammer Super Scoop ... it's the best at clumping, and I never smell her poop. She has used Scoop Away and Tidy Cats before, and we've found the A & H to be the best at getting rid of odors. :)
