I lost my 8 month old kitty Tigger the other day. I am looking to adopt but cannot afford the local pound's 60 dollar price tag currently.

The shelter's carry high adoption rates to make the point that owning a cat is expensive if an unexpected expense (like an emergency vet bill) comes up. I guess they feel that if you can afford $60.00 for a kitty they are pretty satisfied you can meet any other cost when it comes up.

Kevin....what have you done to try to find your 8 month old cat?? Have you contacted rescues/pounds?? I would go to this site and see if you can find your lost cat:

While I understand and see your point, I think that it does not serve in the long run. And from what I have seen they will go ahead and euthanise them when there people out there like me, for instance, who would but gladly adopt one but for the high fee. If such an emergency came up I would do what is best for my kitten, but to start out with such a high price does not make one think "Oh they are expensive, so I better prepare" but rather "Oh that is way too much, so let's look at a hamster..."

Now, I will pay the amount as it looks like that is the only way I can have another kitty. I would like to have to used more to buy her litter and toys and that lot.

I am sorry, but I meant that my cat died. I live in Tennessee and that is what we mean by "losing" a loved one in most cases.

You can do a search for "cat" and put "baby" under age...it will bring up all the kittens in your area. Since it is still early...you may not find very many "young" kittens yet.

Does the fee include spay or neuter? If so, $60 is cheap!!! I paid almost $200 for my boy to be neutered (including tests, etc.) and over $300 for my girl to be spayed.

If the cost doesn't include a spay/neuter, have you budgeted enough to get that done? Do you have enough to treat the new kitty if s/he comes down with a upper resperatory infection because of the stress of a new home?

What Hissy is saying is that there are always going to be more expenses than food, litter and toys. Generally I've seen prices from shelters from $45-$100 for adopting an animal so that the pet has value to the people who adopt it. It seems that people who want a free pet are also more likely to dump it when something doesn't go the way they planned. I'm not saying that's the case with you personally, but that is why shelters charge the fees they do...and why it's recommended that people who are trying to find homes for other animals also charge some kind of adoption fee.
