View Full Version : My litter is rank....lol
Kat_Boy 27th February 2005, 05:48 AM I use Special Kitty, Kitty Litter.....you know, the wal mart brand.....well, for 4 cats, it doesn't work at all.
I was thinking about buying a bag of those crystals, and mixing that 50/50 with the litter, just to see what happens
I feel like crap, I scoop every day, I am not lazy.....but, my mother came over with my sister and she said "whew, smells like a kitty in here" and she has 2 cats.
So, that thourolly embarassed me....now I need to do something. lol
wodesorel 27th February 2005, 06:26 AM I tried the Walmart litter and the Sam's club litter, and even mixed with other brands, it still smelled. I think it's the ingrediants they use or something. All I know is that by the third day I could smell it as soon as I started walking downstairs.
I use Tidy Cats, and I've never had a problem with odor. At Walmart I think it's around 9 dollars for a 27 pound tub. I have three cats and two huge litterboxes, and I can usually go two and a half weeks before I have to change the litter out. (And not because of the smell but because of too many small bits that the scoop can't get.)
And I know what you mean about having the family over. I was impressed with Tidy Cats because of it. My grandma is a clean freak, and always used to complain how much our house smelled when we had our last cat. (The cat was evil, and was my mom's pet and responsibility.) Well, I think my g-ma was expecting a horrid stench since I now have three cats, and I was mighty impressed when she walked in and told me she couldn't even tell I had one!
squirtle 27th February 2005, 07:11 AM I use Fresh Step and I can't ever smell Dori's litter. I saw your other post where you mentioned the food and I think that has a lot to do with it as well. I feed Dori Innova dry and Merrick wet and well her poops just don't stink :lol3:
Javern 1st March 2005, 05:29 AM not sure how many litter boxes you have, I prefer at least 2 per cat. The litter use is more spread out amongst the boxes, easier to keep clean and fresh. My 2 cats have 4 boxes and tend to whiz in one and go #2 in others seperately
Kathryn41 1st March 2005, 03:53 PM I use a mixture of the Arm and Hammer multi-pet flushable litter and S/wheat. I clean the boxes thoroughly once a week and scoop daily (5 boxes, 5 cats) and the only time it smells is if a cat has just used it or I haven't scooped yet and it is the end of the day, and it is only in the area of the box then.

maverick_kitten 1st March 2005, 03:58 PM baking soda will get rid of some of the smell
MissCharlotte 1st March 2005, 04:15 PM I use World's Best Cat Litter. It's made from corn, it clumps, is biodegradeable, and is flushable. I haven't smelled urine since November 2003. I had previously used the Tiday Cats regular clay litter and will never go back to it.
sharky 1st March 2005, 05:24 PM I use tidy cats crystal blend .... it aint great .. I am going to try chn scratch and see if my oldest will okay it...
Cirque 1st March 2005, 05:46 PM Feline Pine is what we use here. Cleans up easy! Lasts quite awhile. Starts as pellets, ends up a soft light woody stuff. VERY absorbant (heck its made from wood).
I won't go back to crystals that make the cats cough with terrible dust.
I won't go back to clumping litter that sticks to thier paws.
I won't go back to clay that is a mess, leaves tracks, is heavy and is a pain to clean.
I am so glad we found this, I do not really mind cleaning the litter boxes anymore.
valanhb 1st March 2005, 06:28 PM Tidy Cats, Multiple Cats, Long Lasting Odor Control. The only time I smell the litterboxes is when they have just gone, or if I need to scoop (they have 2 boxes, and sometimes will insist on only using one box some days...). And my boxes are in the hall off the living room (by laundry) and in my walk-in closet. Don't have a problem with odor. :)
Kat_Boy 1st March 2005, 07:06 PM Do you Know if the Tidy Cats products are available at Wal-Mart, or PetValu in Canada? I can't find anything about it.
valanhb 1st March 2005, 07:52 PM Matt, it's actually a Purina product, so I would imagine it would be available in Canada. I looked on their website but couldn't find anything about what countries it is or isn't available in...

I'm also from Ontario, and have seen tidy cats around. I'll keep an eye out for specific stores for you though. I think you might be able to find it at Petsmart. I'd also try any Pet Value's or Global Pet stores in your area, they seem to have a pretty wide assortment of that sort of thing.
Good luck!

I use World's Best too and I mix it with Swheat Scoop. Great stuff!

i use tidy cats scoop in the red bucket (the scent is milder and doesn't bother my allergies). my cats also like arm & hammer unscented scoop, but they switched back to the puny 30# boxes again. so we switched back to tidy cats. $11 for a 30# box of litter just doesn't make sense with three cats. :bigthumb:
Purina has a different website for canada, and i know it's marketed under a different name in canada (i accidentally landed on the canadian site one day).
here's the website:
Purina (http://www.purina.ca/)
ekseabolt 5th March 2005, 05:06 PM We also use Tidy Cat scoop here! Having more then one litter box seems to help also. I have found that the scoopable litter keeps the smell down so much more then the regular type as long as you keep it cleaned out on a regular basis. If you don't it will stink just as bad as anything else. :nausea:
SharonKay 5th March 2005, 05:19 PM I use the flushable arm & hammer litter and it is a dream...
she has a covered litter box and even when I take the top off to clean it out I think, wow, it smells pretty good in here :)
mikenealis 5th March 2005, 08:46 PM I use World's Best too and I mix it with Swheat Scoop. Great stuff!
I use World's Best, too. I switched when I first got Bast because I was worried about her eating the Tidy Cat clumpable, and it clumping in her stomach. Haven't looked back since then.
Yosemite, does adding the Swheat Scoop give you a bit more life out of a pan than World's Best alone?
WellingtonCats 5th March 2005, 09:00 PM We use Vitapet litter! It's good, doesn't track - we change the litter and scrub and disenfect the trays every 2-3 days anyway. :)
Nano 13th March 2005, 03:15 PM Also, I don't know the depth of litter you use, but try going with a deeper layer of kitty litter to help with smells. Right now I am running about 6" deep. ;)
