I was grooming the cats last night and Socks tail is really oily from the base of his tail up. Is there anything i can get to solve this?(bathing is out of the question)

Danielle this sounds like something called stud tail. You can try clipping the hair around it, then bathing with benzoyl peroxide. If it doesn't clear up soon the cat might need to see a vet. Sometimes hormones are given to clear up the condition.

So basically clip the greasy hair?

You want to try and remove as much hair around the area as safely as possible. Then bathe just the area with benzoyl peroxide. Again, if it doesn't go away in a few days, you need to see the vet.

Is he neutered? This was the problem with Mr. Poe –Poe when he first started coming around. Shortly after we had him neutered it cleared up.

Jake tends to get greasy on his belly and legs. He's a red Mac Tabby and they tend to get greasy easily. I'll share a trick with you that I learned from a couple of breeders who also show cats. Before you bathe the kitty, rub him down good with "Goop" handcleaner. Rinse it off then wash the cat with Dawn dishwashing liquid. Rinse and wash with kitties regular shampoo. The last rinse should be water with a little bit of white vinegar in it. This helps to restore the pH balance in the skin and fur. Just a couple of tablespoons in a sink full of water is sufficient.
