Has anybody here tried this product? I just got mine today, along with two refill cartridges. If anybody has one, I would like to hear your opinions on it. I thought it looked like a nice, clean/sanitary way to remove litter box waste with good odor prevention. Any thoughts?

Well...after a few days of using it, I kinda like the Litter Locker. We'll see after the first time I have to clean it out, but, for now, what a nice way to get rid of the litter box mess! Easier than always having to use plastic bags. Cindy W. :)

Odor and germ free
Easy to clean and replace bags

I love it!!! It works great!!

Hey...I like it! No odor...whatsoever. It is neat, clean and absolutely odor-free. Believe it or not, my daughter (12 yr. old), actually LIKES litter box duties/caring for her kitties. I initially purchased this, because I thought the plastic bag thing was a messy way to take care of the litter box. Now, my daughter has a clean and sanitary way of cleaning the kitty boxes. She likes the Litter Locker also. The cost wasn't all that much, certainly worth it in my book. I just hope that cleaning it when it is full and replacing the cartridges isn't a totally gross mess. I'll write more when I cross that bridge...lol. For now...a definite thumbs up! Cindy W. :)

I personally have my heart set on the litter toilet. I don't remember the exact name but it hooks up to the stool or washer drain. It washes the "litter" breaking up the solids then flushes them down the drain the rinses with a solution to kill any bacteria. It is a little pricy but considering the costs of litter, boxes and the bother of cleaning and disposing of the waste and litter I think in the long run, if you plan on keeping your kitties inside, it would be well worth it. No contact with kitty waste, no possible medical problems.

I bought a Litter Locker for my sister, and then wasn't allowed to take it on the plane when I visited (the security people obviously had no idea that such a thing existed), so now I'm "stuck" with it. It is really convenient, and there is no smell or mess, but the cartridges are quite expensive at around $10 for a two-month supply.

I've had my litter locker for about 6 months now and I LOVE it! The only thing I don't like is the $10 or so replacement cartridges, wish they would cut down the cost on those! But there's no smell and clean up is very easy. I empty mine every week, it's very easy to cut off the bag inside (has it's own blade inside that's protected with plastic so no hazard there), and then I just knot off the end of the bag and start fresh. Once you try it you'll see how easy it is to remove the old. Other than that there's really no other cleanup, I wipe mine down only because it gets dusty from sitting by the litter box. When you go to empty it you just open it up and lift out the wheels, pull them apart over the garbage bag and dump the old (this is all after you've cut off the end of the bag and tied it off). So absolutely no mess and no smell!

I Love it!!!

Easy clean up. Easy to use. No smell!

I finally had to empty it as it was full. Very easy to do. I am so glad that I bought it. Much easier and cleaner than the plastic bag method! Give it a try!

Hermoine...
Do not waste your money on the Litter Free Self Washing litterbox. It is not worth the hassle!!

When my boyfriend and I bought our first house together this past March I decided my housewarming present would be a litter free since I didn't want the stink of dirty litter permeating our new house. I had a hard time finding any reviews online...and the ones I did read were either biased toward the company (paid responses) or seemed jaded and skeptical against the product so I decided to do my own research and invest the money.

I believe we picked ours up at Petsmart if I remember correctly, and the package contained everything we needed to get started. It wasn't difficult to hook it up. We placed it in our laundry room across from our washer and dryer since it needed access to a water line and a disposal line. I was a bit surprised at the look of the "litter". It basically has no function other than tricking your cat into thinking they're burying their waste. That being said, we had little blue and white plastic beads all over the house within minutes of opening the package, definitely not a plus.

My biggest concern came when we opened the cleaning fluid. It was blue in appearance like windshield washing fluid, but I wish I could tell you it smelled even that good. The odor turned my stomach before we had even put the box into action so I was definitely having second thoughts.

Before we could allow our cats to use it we were advised by the directions to run the cycle at least once to make sure everything was properly working. It sounded like the washing machine as it was filling up with water and that was probably the quietest step! As the machine began rinsing the beads it sounded like a jet plane taking off in our laundry room. Best part was it needed to run at least 15 minutes to clean and dry the beads properly. We close the laundry room door and waited out the process.

Our cats, Cali and Chase, took to using the litterbox easily enough. I didn't follow the directions that suggest mixing your cats regular litter with some of the training beads to get them used to the texture. I just took their old box away completely and forced them to use the Litterfree (I'm impatient hehe What can I say?).

Once the Litterfree began it's first official duty things got pretty disgusting. I'll spare you all of the graphic details, but suffice it to say, having your cat's feces mixed with a nasty smelling cleanser and swished around for 15 minutes is not something you want to be privy too. Even worse than that, the beads were not completely clean before the drying process began so I'm sure you can imagine just how fragrant cat waste gets as it's essentially being heated with a blow dryer.

Refusing to give up, we tried using it for about 2 days before I just couldn't stand the smell anymore. The beads were becoming increasingly dirty and it really didn't seem to be working as well as their advertisements claimed. At that point I would have jumped at the chance to have a stinky litterbox to replace it.

Being the conscientious consumers that we are, we went through the process of cleaning everything (beads, box, you name it) so that we could package it up and get our refund. It was quite embarrassing trying to explain not just to the cashier, but to the manager, why we weren't satisfied the product. They seemed to want details hehe and I just wanted to dump that thing off.

Rather than taking a full cash refund, we exchanged the Litterfree for a Littermaid and Littermaid carpet and within minutes of getting it home I could tell we were going to be thrilled with it. It requires much less work than the old standard litterbox but worked a hundred times better than the litterfree. I would much rather empty the litter receptacle2x a week than endure the smell and sounds of the "first ever cat toilet". I think it's a great concept but it definitely needs some more improvements before I'll even consider giving it a second try.

But that's just my two cents ;)

~Heidi

PS...It wasn't more than 2 weeks later that my boyfriend and I were in a different Petsmart location and we saw a litterfree on display. My guess is, we weren't the only ones that were less than thrilled with it's performance and someone else's return had received new life as a display model :P

I just bought a Litter Locker from Target a few weeks ago. I love it! Im going to buy another one soon for the other litter box in my house. It is so convenient to just open up the top and pour the used litter and feces in. Turn a little crank to cover the mess and TADA! No mess, no smell (from what Ive heard) no problem. I just wash the little black ring thing on top once a week when I do the litter boxes since it does come in contact with gross litter. But it is so easy and so convenient!! So much easier than using plastic bags each time.
Now I dont have to triple bag everything at the store to sneak some extra bags home ;) ;)
My refill cost $6 which is a bit pricey, but worth it IMO. Im still on the first set of bags so I havent used the refills yet. Speaking of it, I do need to go get my second Litter Locker this weekend. I want one on each floor so both my litter boxes are so easy to clean. :D

ddestes
19th November 2003, 04:53 AM
it's kind of hidden in a way.....with the litter locker open look at the underside of the top portion....you should see a blue piece of pointed plastic....the blade is under it....you cut the bag by drawing the bunched bag underneath that pointed blue plastic piece

hope i described it half way decent so you can find it...post bag if u need more info

I'm still not seeing it. :anon:

OK i have the thing opened and I am looking at the underside of the top. I see the ring that the bags come out, and the inverted scoop holder. Is it closer to the ring that the bags come out of or closer to the inverted scoop holder? And is it more centered or closer to an edge?

Thank you for your help!

Ok, I just went down and opened mine up and it's not blue it's black (sorry about that). It's closer to the bag ring and it is centered. You won't be able to tell there's a blade, you'll just need to drag the bunched bag down under the top black (kind of pointed) plastic piece and pull and the bag will cut on the (I assume) blade underneath.

Hope this helps!

Ya know what? :D I think my unit must have not come with a blade.

I look in the spot that you describe, and there is a white rectangular area butted up and centered next to the ring, but there is no black thing to drag the bag under. I tried to drag the bag around, under, beneath, beside, etc the white rectangular thing but nothing cut the bag. I think the black thing you describe must have either fallen out or not gotten installed on my box.

Oh well. That's ok. I feel better knowing that the reason I can't find it is cuz it ain't there — not cuz I've gone crazy or something! thank you for helping me with this!

So, I have a question for experienced Litter Locker users...

Do you fill up the container and then twist in until it stops? Or do you twist it each time you put something in it? Do you twist in until it locks or just until the litter is out of site?

I'm just curious how everyone does it. And how often do you cut the bag? Or how do you know it's time to cut it?

Sorry so many questions!

Maui
27th November 2003, 05:39 PM
Hi funkyg

I fill up the chute until the litter is a couple inches from the top, then I twist until it stops, not just until it is out of sight. That way the wheel is set for the next load. I turn mine even if there is just a few lumps to prevent any smell — unless it's just dried up pee balls. . .in that case I might let the balls sit there until there's another "load" before turning. Whether you turn each time is really up to you (and your sense of smell :tongue2: ) but when you DO turn, you should turn it until it clicks.

*Don't overfill* the chute so that it is bulging at the top . . . otherwise it will be really hard to turn. . .not just for that particular turn, but until you cut the bag off. Each load should be no more than a few inches from the top so that each half of the wheel has a nice even amount of litter. If one half of the wheel has 10 cups of litter jammed in, it will be hard to turn.

It's time to cut the bag when the wheel is very hard to turn, and that would be different for each cat household, how often they pee and how many kitties. Remember that after the wheel locks in place, you need to turn the wheel back slightly to get it going. Don't force the wheel if you feel resistance. Just turn it back slightly.

Hope you are enjoying it!

I have only had to empty mine once so far so...........The handle got really hard to turn and it was time to empty.

As for use I just scoop once daily and put it all in the locker at the same time and then turn the handle. I scoop out the mess on my litter day which is Monday and then I dump the actual litter into a grocery bag for trash. I don't put my litter in the locker, just the poo and pee mess. I think if you put all of the litter in there on clean up day the bag would only last a short time.

I have to turn my handle every time I put poop in there I wouldnt let it build up, that would smell pretty bad. :nausea: I dont put pee in there because I use crystals and the crystals absorb all the pee. :D

When I emptied the bag (about a week or so of using it) I noticed a lot of "extra" bag in between the poops. It looks like such a waste of bag. But I dont know how else you could do it to spare more bag except letting the poop build up before turning the handle

Helen,

I looked at the Diaper Champs after you mentioned it once. . .is that the device with the "chute" that you stick the diapers through? I was thinking it would be harder for me to aim the pee balls and such through a hoop, rather than the more funnel like the LitterLocker. Have you ever had trouble aiming? I may get one of these for another litter box.

Hell603

Nope no problems whatsoever - that is why I recommend it so highly! OK, I would however not suggest tossing the clumps in like through a basket ball hoop.:tongue2: :tongue2:

The initial cost is a little higher but nothing additional that rackes up cost down the line like the cartridges! And it really controls the smell that would otherwise accumulate.:tongue2: :tongue2:

Give it a try.

Just had to add to this post. I bought a Litter Locker about 2 weeks ago and its all I can talk about it. I tell all the people I know with cats to pick one up. It isn't expensive, the refils are about $7 at walmart and last 2 months. It makes cleaning the litter box fun and easy. I cleaned it out last week and it was so easy and clean that it made me love the thing even more.

I recommend the litter locker to anyone!!!! Its a great investment. Told my hairdresser to get one since he has 2 cats.

Kinda wanted to add to this thread because of what happened this morning...

So it's 3:45am, I'm trying to get ready for work and naturally, my mind doesn't work that early in the morning! I decide to scoop Bay's box before I leave, I drop a clump into the litter locker... and notice that apparently it had run out of bag and I had just dropped it into the container itself!

Okay how did I miss that?! Has anyone ever had something similar happen? I had to totally refill the container, plus dealing with that whole situation from above... all at not even 4am... blah. Shouldn't there be some warning that the bag is empty/close to being empty? Or is it just my fault since I keep scooping when I'm not awake or paying attention?

buckeye23
7th December 2004, 12:56 PM
I grabbed one of these. My refill didn't last me like 2 months, but I think I cleaned the litter box more than once a day. Usually, if I was around and Dakota used the box, I would swoop in when she was done and clean it out. I dunno, maybe I need a new hobby...hehe.

Great investment though, worth every penny.

Ours lasts about a month with 2 girls, and we scoop once /day or once every other (they don't go a lot, and I can't seem to find some clumps, really... not until it's time to dump the thing totally.)

Worth every cent though, because it keeps the Scent from penetrating the house without taking the trash ourt every day.

I've managed to do that two or three times. You actually do get a warning that the bag is close to empty, in the form of little black dots on it. They're easy to miss early in the morning!
I usually cut the bag with a pair of scissors, rather than the built-in safety knife, to avoid too much waste.

Pink,

I use clumping Tidy Cat for multiple cats and while it holds down the smell pretty darn good, it's TERRIBLY dusty (and awful for my sinuses!). I'm going to go back to the black litter with crystals as soon as I run out of Tidy Cat. Once a week isn't too bad though -- better than trekking outside in the cold twice a day ;)

The black litter with crystals? Not sure which kind that is... I've noticed that the Arm & Hammer Super Scoop, which I'm using right now, is also very dusty, contrary to what the label says! And yes, I agree - I'd rather go out to the dumpster once a week than daily - though every time I empty the litter locker, phew what a stench! Doesn't do THAT great a job of containing the odors once the locker is open!

Ya know, I I think it's made by Tidy Cat also -- it comes in one of those square plastic tubs with a blue plastic lid. It's a very dark colored litter, almost black, with blue crystals mixed in. I think it's this one: http://www.tidycats.com/products_10_a.aspx

though every time I empty the litter locker, phew what a stench! Doesn't do THAT great a job of containing the odors once the locker is open!

Diaper genie was the same way LOL -- it was great at keeping the odors inside it, but when you went to empty it out, it was best to do it outside :P

Oh you use Crystal Blend! I used to use that, didn't find anything remarkable about it though - we still use it whenever Baylee is at my boyfriend's and I think it's just okay.

So that explains why whenever I went babysitting, I used to find the diaper genie outside! I never understood!

Just emptied my litter locker for the first time :) -- Looks like I get about a week before I have to empty it (big cat, big poops!), and it does do a great job keeping the smell down (just about non-existent). I am VERY pleased with it, so thanks to all who recommended it!

I got my litter locker today and set it up. I instantly had diaper-genie flashbacks :)

Seems like a nifty device... I'm anxious to see how it holds down the smell after a few days of scooping into it.

How often do you guys find you have to empty it?

I empty it once a week, though that's just a habit I've gotten into. It would probably hold one cat's excretions for two weeks.

I love my litter locker! I have three cats, two of which are kittens- you can imagine how much waste they produce...lol! Using plastic bags just wasn't working out. They were stinky, messy and just all around disgusting to use in an apartment. I'm still figuring out how often I need to empty mine, but wow! it sure is much easier than those plastic baggies! :jump:
