View Full Version : Where do you keep your litter box?
sunshne880 14th July 2003, 02:19 PM I was wondering where everyone keeps the litter boxes in their house? Our friend leaves his in the basement and cracks the door so they can get in and out all day. I wasn't so sure if I was comfortable with that. I've read that alot of people do that, so that thier house doesn't smell. Right now, I have mine in the downstairs bathroom and we are trying to battle the smell.
tuxedokitties 14th July 2003, 02:31 PM In the hall closet. We have a cat-shaped hole cut in the bottom of the door so they can get in & out. We also have one in the spare bedroom (a.k.a. storage room). I wish I could keep another one in the bathroom, but the bathrooms are just too small.
If you use a good clumping litter and knuckle down and scoop twice a day the smell should stay under control. I just make it a routine & it's not too bad.
jcat 14th July 2003, 03:48 PM Our litter box (the closed kind) is in the upstairs hallway, right beside the bathroom door. I use clumping litter, scoop at least once a day, and wash the whole thing out once a week. There's no odor problem.
DragonLady 14th July 2003, 04:14 PM We have a room just for the cats and I have 6 boxes in there. 4 are littermaids and 2 regular. They are emptied twice a day. Very little smell.
Before this we removed the doors to the cabinet under the sink and put the litterbox there. We scooped every time we used the bathroom and that worked great.
Mom of 10 Cats 14th July 2003, 04:19 PM We have a lineup of 11 boxes in the basement, plus one in the attic and one in the computer room. They get scooped no less than twice a day, and there is little to no smell.
Hell603 14th July 2003, 04:35 PM I have a covered one in the master bath.... Get's scooped min of 2 x per day - NEVER A SMELL!!
sunshne880 14th July 2003, 04:44 PM Thanks for the responses... I think what we are smelling is actually the litter itself. I usually scoop it twice a day, and clean it out twice a week. I still don't have a covered one yet, since they are still kinda little, but I think it's starting to become time for one.
Do you think the covered ones make a difference in the smell??
hissy 14th July 2003, 04:46 PM I have 12 upstairs and I run a Citykitty ionic litterbox air purifier all the time, besides keeping the boxes scooped and scrubbed. No smell no problems.

Sicycat 14th July 2003, 09:20 PM I live in a small one bedroom apartment, so mine is under the kitchen table. (I eat in front of the TV, lol) Its a booda dome and I use crystals litter.. doesnt smell at all.
Sunflower 14th July 2003, 09:32 PM I live in a one bedroom basement apartment, and I keep mine behind my door in my bedrooom. I have a covered one, and I scoop it once a day. I have never had a problem with odor.:blobblue:
Slipstream 15th July 2003, 03:33 AM I keep 2 in the storage area with the door open a crack. I scoop at least 2 times a week and empty it once a week, the odor stays under control
Slave2_Ragdolls 15th July 2003, 05:02 AM I have three fur children and two boxes. A regular box in the basement.....and a Litter-Robot in the bedroom. :tongue2:
3kittys 16th July 2003, 04:22 PM Hum, I was just fixing to post something about the smell and I saw this post.
I have 3 kitty's that use the same litter box. My momma cat (along with her babies) have one in their room BUT she won't use it, she will hold it and wait to use the main litter box in the bathroom.
The main box is kept in my back bathroom off of my bedroom by the toilet. It's not covered cause it would not fit. I scoop in the morning, when I get home from work and sometimes before I go to bed. My problem is one cat (she is diabetic) does not cover anything anymore, my other cat has very smelly poop but does cover and my Momma cat, well, I can't tell which is her's. One reason my Gracie's poop probably smells so bad is because I do not feed her high quality food (mostly 9 lives) but my other two get SD Kitten food for dry.
I did read where somebody actually "cleans" theirs once a week so that might me some of my problem also. I will clean it really good this weekend if I don't do it before then. My litter is the clumping kind and I love it.
Any comments???!!
Cathy
Nora 16th July 2003, 04:50 PM I keep mine in the hallway in front of the spare bedroom. I only go in there to iron clothes. It is a covered litter box, which I scoop out three times a week and will totally change every other week. I do not have a problem with odor.
SalemSmith 16th July 2003, 09:51 PM I have 7 furr babies, 12 litter boxes... and all are scooped 3x per day with special litter de-odorizer thrown in the mix... oi....
:kitty2: ~ Salem
nighteyes 22nd July 2003, 07:28 AM I keep mine in the spare bedroom. I have a roll away litter box, so I roll it twice a day, empty all litter every week and scrub the box.
Also have a hepa air filter going 24/7
Phoebes mom 22nd July 2003, 01:48 PM My kitty box is in the basement under the steps we clean it out every other day ( we have 1 adult cat and a kitten ) we don't have an odor problem and it keeps it out of the way. Plus like lots of people the bathroom is to small to have it in there
Princess Purr 22nd July 2003, 02:36 PM i use arm and hammer with crystal and never have an order problem unless i forget to scoop for a few days :anon:
I have two in the computer room closet, two in the large bathroom, two in the kitty room, and one in a litter bench, also there in the room the kittens and snowwhite where/are in. I have a whole lot of litter boxes!
jugen 25th July 2003, 04:10 AM We have four "kids" and four boxes. Two of them are upstairs(one story house) and two are downstairs in the basement.
the 2 upstairs are in our room and in the living room(scooped 2 times a day and cleaned with Antibacterial Dawn once a week, with the litter change)
The 2 in the basement are by my washer and under the stairs. They are scooped every other day and cleaned every two weeks with the same soap and litter change. It costs me about $10.00 every week to change all the litter in their boxes, but I am a clean freak so I can't have any type of icky orders in my house and this works for me so I'll stick to it!
uabassoon 25th July 2003, 04:32 AM I just recently moved into a tiny little apartment and I don't have much room anywhere for my litter box. A lot of people think it's a strange place, but the only thing big about my apartment is my walk in closet. I would normally keep in the bathroom, but my bathroom is tiny and it wouldn't fit in there. I scoop the litter box at least once a day, but sometimes more. They have a covered litterbox, so the closet doesn't smell and it's out of the way.
jgaruba 25th July 2003, 09:59 PM I have Spike's litterbox in the laundry room. At first I thought the noise of the washer/dryer might scare him from using the litterbox, but it doesn't seem to phase him at all. :)
Fluffy'sMom 27th July 2003, 06:00 AM Fluffy litter box is in the closet by the front door of our apartment.
Felicia's Mom 31st July 2003, 03:41 AM I keep both litter boxes in the bath room. This is because all the other rooms in my apartment have wall to wall carpeting.
sockiesmom 31st July 2003, 03:18 PM In my closet. I know it sounds yucky, but it's not that bad and it's the only way my parents will let me have a cat. I scoop it twice (sometimes three times) a day, and I never have a problem with odor. Socks also has a litterbox down in the basement, but she very rarely uses it and it only needs to be scooped every 2 days because she only uses it if she's lounging in the basement and doesn't want to walk all the way upstairs.
(1 kitty has two bathrooms - the 4 humans have 1 bathroom... hmm...) ;)
callmekitten 1st August 2003, 02:48 PM Gambit's box is in the bathroom. Other than the kitchen it's the only room in the apartment that's not carpeted.
Lynx 2nd August 2003, 02:14 AM Holy cow, I can't believe how anal you guys are with cleaning your litter boxes. I clean mine once a day, and sometimes I skip a day if it isn't bad. Mind you it's only two cats, so it's not out of control. I keep the box in a decent sized storage closet. It's like a mini-room just for the kitties to mess up.
WillowsMom 3rd August 2003, 09:46 AM Since I live with my Grandpa and he's got a free roaming bird Willow and I are stuck in a bedroom. So, I keep her litter box on the side of my bed. it's between the wall and my bed giving her some privacy and keeps it hidden from guest :) She's a pretty non smelly cat :lol3: I use just regular litter non clumping......she's not to fond of the clumping!!
Pan&Pani 7th August 2003, 11:12 PM We have ours in the attached garage, with a cat door installed in the door between the house and the garage. Very little noise out there, as compared to the laundry room.
PurrfectCatlove 7th August 2003, 11:32 PM :silver: I have one ltter box in my bathroom but is as big like 2 boxes , then I have 3 litter boxes in the hallway bathroom , there is one box in my son's room unter his desk and 6 litter boxes in the inclosure for right now . Will @ more when the roofing problem is solved . I scoop at least 2 times a day and clean the boxes a min. of once a week , well maybe more like every 5 day's .
OK now I got a question . With what do you clean the litter boxes ? I clean with Bleach Cleaner and land stand for 3-5 minutes to kill bac. then scrup them and rins with the waterhose very well down . I clean mine outside in the drive way :D
SkyKitty 8th August 2003, 12:38 AM I have 3 litter boxes and 2 are in the laundry room and the other is in the guest bathroom. All 3 are covered with a filter that is replacable. I use the clumping litter, it's great!
I scoop 2 x's a day and rotating wash every week. No odours at all in my house.:D
April
Susanna 18th August 2003, 04:20 PM In the spare bathroom bathtub, with cleaning it out daily and lots of air freshners in there. Working fabulous so far.
TONIM68 5th September 2003, 04:59 PM Unfortunately, we are apartment bound and our bathroom is too small to put a large litter box for our two boyz. So, we have the litter box tucked in a corner of our dining room. I know it sounds gross but it's really not too bad... my hubby found this enclosed litterbox called "Catty Corner" and it's really great!
http://www.petsmart.com/cat/shopping/litter_center/litter_pans_and_liners/products/product_27587.shtml
It's got a tray in the bottom - so all you have to do is lift the tray to sift the clumping litter out, dispose of the "nastys", flip the top to the bottom, replace the tray and pour the remaining litter back in. It's a snap! And odor is to a minimum since it's all enclosed. Plus, since it's shaped like a triangle, it fits nicely in to corner, hence the name "Catty Corner".
Suzy 7th September 2003, 06:06 PM I keep mine in our den, and I scoop it out at least once a day. Since my computer is in here with the litter box, it gets scooped more often if anything really smelly happens. Simba scratches like there's no tomorrow, but never actually manages to cover anything up!
I use the clumping litter; I also use litter box liners, and once a week I pull out the bag and start fresh. I tried to use a covered box - Simba was game to try it, but he couldn't figure out how to get the whole way in. So his rear would still be sticking out of the door when he would start to go...I decided it would be much better to have an uncovered box with everything still in the box, than a covered box with nothing actually making it in there.
greycat2 7th September 2003, 07:08 PM I use both regular clay (For Kuce) and the clumping low dust kind (For Sphinx due to his allergies)
Kuce's litter is in the bathroon and Sphinx's is in the living room corner.
I, too, live in a small 2 bedroom apartment with my family - luckly the bathroom is big enough for a litterbox.
Every room is carpeted except the bathroom and kitchen so we use newspaper under Sphinx's box for the loose litter that may come out. and I clean them at least 2x a day.
I also use the plastic litterbox liners in both pans.
Iceangel 21st September 2003, 02:51 PM i keep mine in the bathroom, its closed with a door, plus i used litter crystals so it doesn't smell at all

chelle 27th September 2003, 08:29 AM we have a HUGE kitchen,we keep in there of course it's
away from the table :bunny:
kidsncats 27th September 2003, 01:45 PM We've got one in our bedroom(large covered), and the other is squeezed into our bathroom right next to the toilet. I worried that privacy would be an issue with it being in the bathroom and was prepared to move it if needed. Oddly enough Simon likes company. I swear he waits until a human is using the bathroom THEN goes in and does his business talking to whoever is using the facilities.
GlitteryJezebel 29th September 2003, 11:48 AM Hello, I am new to this site. Umm my two kitties are really disgusting. I love them alot and wouldn't give them up for anything, but, what do I do? Am I doing something wrong? In order for them to be sanitary I have to scoop their litter box everytime they go which is about more than 10 times a day! And if i don't get to their poo immediately after they go, then if one of them needs to go again they walk in their poo and then jump all over the furniture and carpet. The younger one, (about 5 months old) plays in the litter box even when there's poo in there. Any suggestions? I've never had indoor cats of my own before and I am extremely confused on why no one talks about their kitties being nasty, and how easy they are to care for. I'd really like some help, as I have a lot of trouble fitting studying into my schedule. It's poo, poo, and more poo. Is my problem that I should have a house instead of an apartment? Sorry this is long..
Thanks,
Jezebel:eek:
tuxedokitties 29th September 2003, 03:12 PM What kind of food are you giving the kitties? Some foods are less nutritionally dense than others, and the cats have to eat more (and poop more) to get what they need. If you're feeding a grocery store food, you might want to consider switching to a 'premium' food from the pet store - you can ask your vet for a reccommendation. I noticed a big difference in my cats when I switched from cat chow to Science Diet. They poop a lot less, and it doesn't smell as bad.
Also, it's best to have at least one litterbox per cat, and you might want to switch to a type of litter marked 'low tracking' or 'less tracking'. There are even self-cleaning litterboxes on the market - if you can spend the money, you might want to look into getting one of those.
:)
hissy 29th September 2003, 05:33 PM When were these kittens at the vet last? That much poop is not normal under any circumstances unless you are non-stop feeding food that is not good for them. I would get them to the vet to be evaluated. If they are long hair (Persian etc...) you can ask the vet to clip the back hairs for you so they don't get stuff caught there. Kittens routinely will play in a litterbox if they have no other stimulation around- a tall cat post, a perch by a window, cat toys and interaction with you.
Kittens are not nasty, they are fun and challenging and frustrating at times. Chances are these kittens were not with mom long enough to learn about the litterbox. You need more than one litterbox for these kittens and you might think about investing in a self-cleaning one as well. But first and foremost, I would get them both to the vet.
GlitteryMittens 1st October 2003, 04:45 PM This is GlitteryJezebel, for some reason I wasn't able to log back in so I had to make this name - (my little boy cat's name).
I feed them both Science Diet.. Took them to the vet after the last post and he also suggested another litter box and that feeding them two times a day is not too much. I think the main problem I have with Jezebel's litter box habits is that, while turning around to sniff if she'll poke her poop then cover it, so poop gets in her paws. Why does she poke it? Never had a cat do that and the vet didn't know why she does it either. They checked her for worms, anything that might be causing her to examine her own feces. They said there's nothing wrong with her physically.
I study at home, and I am out of work so I'm here 24-7 except when going to a grocery store. I play with them for maybe a total of 4 hours a day.. But when we're playing, Mittens will jump in the litter box to hide from me and when i come by he jumps while tossing litter at me. They both have cat stands and there are plenty of places we've set up for them to play and high places for them to sit by the windows and hiding places. I think you were right Hissy about them not being with mom to learn. But I'm not sure what to do. It's not healthy for the cats or us humans to be exposed to feces being tracked everywhere. Tuxedokitties, do you know any of the brand names of the litters marked "low tracking"? The vet suggested maybe teaching her not to touch it.
Thanks for your advice.
