Most of you know you can buy dried tuna flakes for cat treats, but you might be paying more than you have to! Asian/Japanese food shops sell bonito (tuna) flakes for human consumption but they're much cheaper than what you'd pay for the 'cat treat' packaged flakes.

A word of warning, though, make sure you read the package ingredients to make sure it is only bonito (tuna) and nothing else, since asian foods are known to have MSG and so forth in them.

To compare prices...
3 oz "Jumbo Tuna Flakes" from Drs. Foster and Smith are $15.99
3.52 oz Japanese brand tuna flakes are $4

HTH someone :wavey:

You're right! I found a good sized package of bonito flakes at Whole Foods for less than the container of "Kitty Kaviar" I'd previously bought.

Thanks for the tip and also for reminding everyone to read the ingredient label carefully. :)

Thanks for the tip. Next time I'm low I'll have to check out the local Asian grocery.:)

Thanks for the tip!! What with the way prices are going up, saving a couple bucks here and there is a necessity.
