View Full Version : Mayor puts $5 bounty on stray cats, which will be euthanized
Nekochan 11th March 2008, 09:24 AM Is it just me or does this seem like a REALLY bad idea? It would be too easy for people to steal pets and remove their collars. :(

Cat Bounty in Randolph, Iowa
Randolph, Iowa (KPTM) - An Iowa mayor takes extreme measures to get wild cats off the streets.
After several complaints Randolph city leaders are now asking for help.
The mayor's plan, is to put a bounty on all cats, so if you can lure one to you and catch it, it'll earn you five bucks.
Any stray cat or dog that doesn't have tags or a collar will be taken to a Sidney vet and put down.
DawnofSierra 11th March 2008, 09:35 AM Oh my goodness, that's horrible!
yayi 11th March 2008, 10:41 AM Stray cats are a nuisance because they tear up the trash? I would spend the proposed bounty money of better trash bins then!
theimp98 11th March 2008, 02:24 PM looks like the americans are up to it again also.
lets hope people drive that mayor nuts until he stops it.
catsknowme 11th March 2008, 08:51 PM What!!! IMO, someone needs to check for lead in the drinking water--soon! They have a bad epidemic of stupidity in that town! So, those complaining morons haven't enough sense to start a humane TNR??? And why involve the dogs???? Any idiot would realize that it's tamed animals that will be caught the easiest and turned in.... Okay, maybe they have a problem, not unlike most American cities - they just have a population of humans TOO STUPID to actually SOLVE the problem themselves.
strange_wings 11th March 2008, 09:06 PM I looked the city up, listed population as of 2000 was 209. That really explains a lot. Little towns like that tend to sometimes be a bit backwards - or at least they certainly are here. If there's a problem animal here, people shoot it. :slant: I'm also guessing that with 209 people and a median income per household at $34,861 - no one wants to spare money for TNR.
Tougher leash laws and encouraging people to spay and neuter their pets would be a lot better.
Momofmany 11th March 2008, 10:55 PM Way back in the dark ages of the "Humane" movement, cities like New York put bounties on stray pets. Children would earn money by picking up any animal they could find and bringing it to the "pound". Children would steal pets for the bounty. The bounty if I recall was 15 cents. The pets were dumped into water containers by the hundreds and drowned.
This is beyond sick. I don't always agree with the practices of contemporary humane societies, but this puts the town back into the dark ages.

Sorry, couldn't find an exact address as the town probably doesn't have a city hall. But I suspect if you address a letter to the mayor (Vince Trively) as below - they'll get it to him. I've lived in a town that size and everyone knows everyone.
Vance Trively, mayor
Randolph, Iowa 51649
ckblv 12th March 2008, 10:49 PM You may want to do something about this disgusting practice that is happening in Des Moines, Iowa. Pathetic

What does that have anything to do with "English only law"?
ckblv 12th March 2008, 11:18 PM Nothing, just has to do with Iowa. Sorry, if off topic, but how disgusting is putting a bounty on cats. Sounds like something that would happen in China.
catsknowme 13th March 2008, 01:09 AM :( Unfortunately, there are sickos out there who support this practice. I found this link that has this to say about ferals:

That was a link that I found from reading the SunTime's article re. the OP :( Their article started out, "Hey, Cat Haters! They're paying a bounty on cats in this town :nono: :nono:
catsknowme 13th March 2008, 11:31 PM Please read these articles - the mayor refuses to consider any help from the AlleyCat Allies and also, the veterinarian named in the news article will not participate in euthanizing cats - he has offered only to help with TNR :bigthumb: and has issued his formal statement.
Alley Allies requests your help!!

Well, great news!
Following the above link, it appears the bounty has been lifted.
adymarie 14th March 2008, 04:01 PM Do you agree with this. Too me, I think this is a sad way to deal with a difficult situation.

ckblv 14th March 2008, 04:08 PM I hope with all the bad publicity that Iowa is receiving with this, they will stop this horrific practice today.

adymarie 14th March 2008, 04:23 PM Sorry about that!
To me this sets a very bad precedent. Next thing there will be catnapping so people can get the bounty!
