Apparently so far no one has been sick. But whether the recall will have any lasting effect on how those cattle are treated...?

I've been seeing this on Yahoo!news for awhile now. Those poor, poor dairy cows :bawling: The end of their career is so tragic - I am glad that the Humane Society exposed this story. Think of the countless agonies and sufferings that will be prevented

I'll take an unpopular perspective on this.
First, I think the abuse was absolutely outrageous and uncalled for and I hope that the losers that perpetrated it get their just desserts. In fact, there are some things that I'd like to say about it, but none of it is printable here.
However, I don't necessarily think that such a recall was needed, and I wonder just how many steaks I've personally eaten that came from abused cows.
Probably most of them, IMO - I don't see the slaughterhouse industry as a humane industry to BEGIN with. There is a reason they call it a slaughterhouse - it isn't a "cows go gently to rainbow pasture" business.
I agree that proper precautions should ALWAYS be taken to prevent mad cow disease being transmitted, but the fact is, and to the best of my knowledge the USDA has stated that there is nothing to fear from the meat that was distributed. The recall was done as a "just in case."
So now those cows not only got abused before death, it was FOR NOTHING.
Flame me if you will, but I think that there is a whole heck of a lot that goes on in the food industry that people are NOT made aware of, and ignorance IS bliss. What we don't know won't always harm us.
