Tiny got neutered four days ago. While he was in the cage after neutering, he managed to pee all over himself. He tends to do this when confined--every time I put him in the carrier, he pees or poops. It's pretty disgusting. (Sorry, Tiny, but it's true!!)

Anyway, I thought the smell would vanish eventually; but apparently tomcat smell is skunk stench's little brother, because Tiny still smells like tomcat, despite that he's recovered quite well from the neutering and is properly grooming himself.

So. Four days after neutering, is it safe to give him a bath? If not, what else could I do to get the smell out of his fur? I've already tried wiping him down with a wet cloth--no go.

And if I do give him a bath, can I use baby shampoo instead of a special cat shampoo?

Not looking forward to wrestling the cat, but not liking the way he smells either. Help!

Yes it would be ok to give him a bath. Just be careful of washing in that area since its sensitive.

I was advised by the vet to wait at least 7 days before bathing Anastasia after her spay, she wet herself on her flight over to me. Boys surgery is of course less of a wound, but I would just ring the vet and ask to make sure.

Yes it should be fine. But it is always best to call the vet and make sure. Just use a kitten/cat shampoo and then use a vinegar rinse. Fill a tub or bucket with 2-3 gallons of water and 2-3 Tablespoons of white vinegar to rinse all the shampoo out.

I will wait another few days, just for safety's sake. By then, maybe he won't stink anymore, and I won't have to bathe him anyway! Maybe I'll give him another rubdown with a wet cloth...

(I'm quite experienced with bathing cats--I stayed with a friend for a summer once, and her cat Skimble was a bottle baby who didn't know how to lick himself clean and got weekly baths! But that doesn't mean I like it any more than the cat does.)

Maybe you can try those wipes they make for cats... similar to baby wipes. I remember seeing them at Wal-mart and Krogers.

That's what I used on Elliott after he was neutered.
When I brought him home he was still out and in his carrier.
After he was awake and I opened the carrier door the first thing I did was wipe him down with one of those kitty wipes.
I can't remember them name of them, all I can remember is they were in an orange package...they smelled wonderful and it took the urine smell away.

Hmm. Wonder if regular baby wipes will work? They're nontoxic, right? (But then, babies don't lick themselves... at least not on their butts!)

You can use regular baby wipes, just make sure they are the unscented ones.

Now that's a thought--poor Tiny smelling like roses, right after he gets neutered! Don't worry, I'll use unscented! I hate perfumes, myself; but Tiny's sense of smell is quite a bit better than mine.
