Another question ha ha. I was wondering what shampoo I should use for my kitties. I haven't bathed them before but I can feel their coats getting a little greasy and they are getting a little smelly so would like to wash them.

Should I buy a special kitty shampoo for them? Or is it okay to use something I may already have? Thought I would ask here before I tried anything as I don't want it to have a negative affect on my babies.

Use a pet shampoo. Not human or detergents. They strip the coat. There are many puppy and kitten shampoos out there. Look for it to say detergent and soap free. Or say will not strip the coat.

I agree with using a pet shampoo, they need different pH etc than we do, you can usually find quite a few at your pet store

I show my kitty and I love Bubbles N scrubbles. You can get Coat conditioners and sheen sprays also. They have Kitten & tear free varieties. They take Paypal or Credit Cards and have speedy delivery. If you arn't from Australia though It might be best to ask first..

I would use a good quality shampoo, like Nexxus or one of those top brands. Be sure to put some conditioner on the coat after washing.

I use a pet shampoo I get from our vet that is good for kitties.

I use Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo. The no tears kind. It is gentle and it smells great!

I have a pet shampoo. I can't think of the name, but it's green and is supposed to be good for their skin. I saw the conditioner on Foster & Smith.

I love Earthbath shampoos for cats and dogs...you can use their product on either animal...they are soap-free, EXTREMELY mild, and leave your kitty smelling WONDERFUL and soft...they are also made from 100% natural stuff, and completely biodegradable. I use the Earthbath Mango Tango on the kitties (on the RARE occassion that they need bathing), and on Melvin the Golden Retriever, and Puppy gets bathed with Earthbath Tea Tree and Aloe shampoo to help her with her hot spots.

As everyone else I use pet shampoo too but I have on a few rare occasions used baby shampoo on my cats. Its not as aggresive as "adult human" shampoos and it works in case of emergencies though thats usually my last choice. Pet shampoo always is the first option.

That is a common misconception. Do not mistake tear less for gentle to dogs. Baby shampoo is formulated to help with cradle cap. That formulation is just as harsh on dogs as adult human shampoo. There is no human shampoo that is gentle enough for dogs. The pH is completely different and the manufacturers use detergents and soaps that we can take because our pours regenerate at a fast rate. While dogs have no pours and it takes at least 3 months before their skin repairs itself.

There are a few "human " shampoos that are okay but they arent labelled as shampoo s :)

I (and a lot of breeders) use Dawn dishwashing liquid and a cat conditioning shampoo followed by a vinegar + water rinse. (2-3 T of vinegar to 2-3 gal of water.) I have good success with this and my cats coats are not stripped or dull. They are shiney and healthy and they don't have skin problems. I would start with just a cat shampoo and the vinegar rinse though. Just because they way I do it takes longer and you'll want to keep it simple at first. Stay away from Dog shampoos for your cat. Many of them contain ingredients that are not good for cats but are ok for dogs. Don't use anything with tea tree oil in it. It can be deadly to a cat. Espcially if it doesn't get rinsed completely off (no residue what so ever). Believe it or not, pet stores still sell it even though many people have lost their pets from it.

People should read labels. Yes never use tea tree oil or tar on their cats. But there are other dog shampoos' perfectly fine for cats as well. Read the labels! I'm not even going to comment on the other stuff.

The name of the shampoo I use is called Tails & it's a wheat grass shampoo. They also make one for dogs called Wags.

:confused: my boyfriends mother was actually bathing her poor kitty with pinesole every week. Of course we make her stop when we went to visit.

Oh my.. that's kind of scary. Glad you could convince her to stop that!
