Special Needs Cats: Peanut

  • Last updated Yesterday by Anne
Today we turn the spotlight at Peanut, as his owner orangeishcat shares the story of  this sweet cat with weakened hind quarters:   Peanut has a severe weakness in his hind quarters and very little motor control. He cannot jump up onto things, and when he rubs against you he will bounce off and fall over due to his lack of control over his back half. He will settle down in your lap for pets, but cannot remain still - his backside is constantly twitching and he's always rearranging himself. He likes to be stretched out, as that seems to be the most comfortable... read more

Special Needs Cats: Joji

  • Last updated 5/19/12 by Anne
TCS member yayi shares the story of Joji, a senior cat who's lost both her hearing and the flexibility of her joints -   Her name is Joji and a calico. She was the resident feral cat living in the property when I moved in back in 1997. Now that she is at least 15 years old, she is deaf and has arthritis. She can't jump from high places, walks very slowly, and will not respond to my calls if she has her back to me. Her appetite is not as good as when she was younger but she loves raw food and that is all she eats. I believe that diet is what is lengthening her... read more

Special Needs Cats: Meet Little

  • Last updated 5/17/12 by Anne
Karen Lyn shares with us the story of Little, the Blind and the Beautiful -     Little is the sunshine of my life. He is my 2nd foster failure. Around 5 months old, I realized he could only see bright lights. Gradually he became completely blind. He gets around so well it took me all those months to realize he couldn't see and even then I only realized it because I was using him to compare to my other kitten who I thought might have an eye injury. I figured since they were the same age, they should have about the same vision, right? What a... read more

Special Needs Cats: Meet Keyser

  • Last updated 5/16/12 by Anne
Keyser has deformed front paws. His owner darkeyedgirl shared with us what living with this sweet purring bundle of joy is like.   Keyser was a stray we took in last year (he was dumped off in our neighborhood and we just bonded with the little guy). His special need is his front paws - he has a deformity that my Vet has never seen in her 20 years of being a Vet! He is missing two digits on each of his front paws, and has NO ankles. One paw has his two digits pointing in towards each other; we noticed when he first showed up at our door, the one claw was growing... read more

May Special - Special Needs Cats

  • Last updated 5/14/12 by Anne
Most people adopt healthy young cats. As responsible owners, they take into account what caring for a healthy cat involves: feeding, cleaning the litter box and generally providing a safe and loving environment. But what happens when a cat needs more than that?   Special needs cats come in many forms and shapes. Their special needs can be the result of an illness, an injury, or a congenital anomaly, or even simply aging. They may be blind, deaf or paralyzed; suffer from asthma or epileptic seizures; or have an ongoing medical condition such as diabetes or... read more

May Blog of the Month - Catsparella

  • Last updated 5/8/12 by Anne
Catsparella is almost like a snazzy online magazine, with posts that offer a wonderful mix of pop culture, art, crafts and news stories. They all have one thing in common: cats. It's a personal favorite of mine, so I am thrilled to bring you this interview with Stephanie, the blogger behind this fun enterprise.   Please, tell us about yourself and your cats. I live in New Jersey with my two cats, Charlie and Priscilla. I had always grown up having a dog, but somehow developed an affinity for cats in my teenage years. I considered myself a "crazy cat lady"... read more

Free Feral Cat Spay Day

  • Last updated 4/24/12 by Anne
Friday, the 27th of April, is Free Feral Cat Spay Day.   For many people, feral cats are as transparent as glass in water. Others, often a vocal minority, consider them to be nothing more than pests or vermin and will act to "get rid" of them.   Cat lovers do see feral cats. We see them for what they are: domestic cats that belong to the very same species as the precious felines that share our homes. A great many members of TheCatSite.com are actively involved in feral cat care, providing these kitties with water, food and shelter.   Cats are very prolific... read more

Be Prepared - First Aid for Cats

  • Last updated 4/5/12 by Anne
April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month. Time to ask yourself, how prepared are you for a medical emergency involving your cat?   Our cats require routine veterinary care, and sometimes treatment for more specific predicaments, an ailment or an injury. We all have, or should have, a veterinarian that we know and trust to take care of our cat’s medical care needs. But what about emergencies, when the first minutes of treatment can be crucial and even life-saving? Do you know what to do in the event of a burn, a gushing cut or an incapacitating fall? Do you... read more
