Special Needs Cats – Joji The Senior Cat

Meet Joji the senior cat with a character that's as vibrant as her calico coat. As she's aged, she's faced challenges like deafness and arthritis, but her spirit remains unbroken. In this article, we'll explore her journey as a resident cat since 1997, her transformation over the years, her relationship with her human companion, and the lessons she offers about aging gracefully.

From her dominance in the household to her tender moments of affection, Joji's story is a precious tale you won't want to miss. Curious to know how a small cat holds sway over an entire household, even a dog? Read on to find out.

Joji: A Calico with a Rich History

Joji, a beautiful calico, has lived on my property since I moved here in 1997. Her striking colors and wild nature caught my eye from the beginning.

Life at 15: Dealing with Age

Now at least 15 years old, Joji is deaf and struggles with arthritis. Jumping from high places is no longer an option for her. She walks with a slow, deliberate pace. If she has her back to me, she won't respond to my calls.

A Change in Diet: The Secret to Longevity?

Her appetite has changed since she was younger. She now loves raw food, and that's all she eats. Could this raw food diet be the secret to her long life? I think so.

The story of Joji isn't just about a cat growing old; it's a tale of adapting, changing, and living life to the fullest, regardless of age.

Her love for raw food and the way she carries herself despite her age-related challenges is an inspiration. Stay with us as we explore more about Joji's dominance in the house, her relationship with me, and her precious gift of friendship.

Joji's Dominance: The Unchallenged Leader

Supreme Mistress in the House

It is said that in the cat world when the alpha cat shows signs of weakness, it is the best opportunity for the wannabes to jump in. But Joji goes unchallenged in the house.

Even the dog gives way and stops when she passes by. She is not a big cat. As a matter of fact, she seems to have shrunk in her old age.

Though not big, Joji commands the room. Age has even seemed to shrink her, but her presence remains large.

I believe Joji decided to remain the supreme leader in the house. She will only step down by her choice or when her time comes.

Concerns and Care: The Vet Visits

Visits to the vet are not as often as they should be for the elderly. I am worried and scared for her. Joji gets so upset when she is in the carrier on the way for a check-up.

She always behaves at the clinic but I can feel her unusually fast heartbeat as I hold her in my arms and see in her eyes that she wants to go home. So I intend to take her only when necessary.

From Outdoor Explorer to Indoor Companion

Joji used to love the outdoors, but age has limited her outside visits. Her naps are more frequent and longer indoors now. Though never one to sit in a lap, she now seeks my warmth, my company. Whether I'm watching TV, at the computer, or reading a book, Joji's there.

Her transition from outdoor adventurer to indoor companion shows her adaptability and the depth of our connection. Her presence is a daily reminder of loyalty and the unspoken bonds that can exist between humans and their animal friends.

Joji's Friendship: A Precious Gift to Treasure

Summer Evenings in the Garden

It is now summertime and it gets uncomfortably hot in the evenings. I often sit in the garden to enjoy the breeze. Joji will lay purring beside me. Sometimes I imagine she is telling me stories of her adventures.

When I pet her, she looks up and I think she is smiling. I tell her she is the most beautiful girl, I love her and I thank her for being my best friend.

Joji's Affectionate Gestures

Sometimes Joji nods and falls back to sleep. Other times, she leaves to find a cooler spot. But often, she rubs her head on my hand and gives me a lick. It's her way of giving me a kiss. This act of affection is a treasure I'll remember forever.

The bond between Joji and me is more than just owner and pet; it's a relationship built on mutual understanding, love, and respect. Her presence enhances my life, and the simple gestures she makes have profound meaning.

The shared moments in the garden are snapshots of a connection that transcends ordinary experiences. They are memories to cherish, stories to tell, and a reminder of the unique and precious gift that Joji is to my life.
