Of Cats and Men

It doesn't take a sophisticated stats program to determine that most of our forum members on TCS are women. Facebook probably has the best stats out there, and so I can tell you men make up no more than ten percent of our Facebook page fans.

Why so few? Why are cats considered a woman's pet? Why do we have "crazy cat ladies" as a cultural icon, but no "crazy cat gentlemen"? I can attest that the wonderful men that we have on the board take excellent care of their cats and love them just as much as any woman would, so why the cultural discrimination?

Well, I'm not the only one wondering. A group in LA has started a campaign to change this mindset, and I suggest we join them in declaring this the -

Cat Guy Week!


Where real men show their love for felines!

Well, let me start this off by saying that I am a guy who likes Harleys (2002 Softail FXST Custom), fast cars (480hp 1998 Mustang GT), trucks (2004 F150), computers (IT applications developer and analyst), high-end audio/video, guitars, multi-track recording, home ownership, etc. and the other usual "guy" things, AND has THREE cats named Doodad, Ponce and Moonbat. And I LOVE my three cats. They are funny, affectionate, loyal (for the most part), loyal (well, sometimes) and great bug killers (nary a scorpion or spider in my house I tell you!). I have always liked cats -- they have a little bit of an "attitude" (if you know what I mean) that I really seem to relate to. As far as cats being a “woman’s” pet, I know some people feel that way and I really don’t care. I am not insecure enough about my “maleness” to give it a second thought :)

Wow! This is great. I never thought a cat would enjoy a motorcycle ride! My husband is a cat lover so he can be added to this category too!

My friend whos a guy has recently got a cat and I too want a cat. I know plenty of other guys who has cats too so I wouldnt have considered cats to be a womens pet.

I think it depends on the man. My husband pretends to be so tough, but our girl cat has him wrapped around her little paws.

They run around and sweat, and if you don’t bathe them (but you have to catch them first!), they become filthy. Dogs can’t keep themselves clean.

Keeping cats is not macho. Definition of macho - an insecure guy with something to prove. I've got 3 cats and I'm a very secure guy with absolutely nothing to prove.
