Cats on a Leash?

Written by Anne

I confess, I was surprised to see so many responses by members when I first posted this question on our cat forums. The "cats on a harness and leash" thread turned out to be a great resource for me when writing this month's feature article:

Harness and Leash Training for Cats

Your cat may or may not be a good candidate for harness and leash training, but if you've never tried before, or even if you have tried and failed, I hope you'll find our little guide useful.

One must understand that your cozy kitten has a right to roam from birth.

I have a 14 year old black cat who observed me putting a harness on my dog for about 3 years. The routine for harnessing my dog goes something like this; I put the harness over her head, I snake it down her back, she puts her paw through the appropriate hole, and I buckle it. My cat, one day, decided he wanted to do it and he tried to with my dogs harness. I was extremely amused so I went to the pet store and bought a harness in his size. He now goes through the process just like my dog. He goes out on my deck with the harness on and walks around in all his pride. My cat decided on his own that he wanted to be leashed and walked. It is really funny to watch him put his leg through the hole and strap.
