My Cat Has An Emergency and I Don't Know What To Do!!
Plan for it! You should start saving for emergencies the very day you bring your kitty home! It doesn't take much, just a few dollars every week or month and you'll rest easier knowing that if something out of the ordinary comes up, you will have the money you need to cover it.
You will also want to plan for your cat's "retirement" stage of life. Older cats can and oftentimes do experience chronic health issues which can be very draining on your wallet. Since you will already be saving a little each week or month for your cat's health care needs, just remember to increase the amount so you can add a little extra each year as she ages.
If you don't know whether or not there is a 24-hour Emergency Animal Clinic in your area, grab the yellow pages and let your fingers do the walking. Locate the name, address and telephone numbers of the clinics closest to you. Take a moment to drive to the clinic to see how long it takes for you to get there - but keep in mind that during the wee hours of the morning, traffic may be lighter. Once you have found the clinic, step inside and take a quick look around to see how their waiting rooms are managed. If you are comfortable that this is the place you want your precious kitty to be seen in the event of an emergency, then make certain you post the name, address and telephone number of this clinic nearby your telephone along with the Poison Control Center and ASPCA hotline numbers.
If you are new to pet ownership, you'll need a regular vet too. So be prepared to do some homework. Ask other pet owners, friends, coworkers or family members whom they use and why. The best end result will be a vet who is not only competent both clinically and diagnostically, but is also someone with whom you feel comfortable and who seems to genuinely care about your cats.
- Make a savings plan for your cat's health care needs
- Save a set amount each week or month and add to that amount as your cat matures
- Locate the nearest Vet Emergency Center and know how to get there quickly in an emergency
- Find a vet who is competent and with whom you feel comfortable
